The Movia estate has been in existence since the year 1700. It was purchased by the Kristancic family in 1820 and is currently run by Ales Kristancic who has been described by Decanter Magazine as having "the creativity of Andre Ostertag, the energy of Angelo Gaja and the dedication of Willi Brundlemayer plus inherited flair and determination." Even during the communist era, when it was nearly impossible to have a private company, Movia remained in its family's hands. In fact, it was the only estate in all of the Collio of Slovenia to be in private hands. Estate holdings include 38 acres, 20 of which are on the Italian side of the Goriska Brda (Collio), and 18 acres are on the Slovenian side. On this narrow piece of land, which has the best position in all of the Collio, is the location of Movia. The low land of the Friuli Plain passes over the slopes of the first hills, which are therefore provided with ample sunlight. The soil is poor marl of Collio, thereby forcing the roots to search deep for their nutrients. Most of the effort is put into the vineyards, as the Movia philosophy is that the quality of the wine is determined by the vineyards. The vines are densely planted and they are lightly burdened. All harvest is done by hand, selecting only the best quality bunches. The cellar is equipped with the latest technology and winemaking is kept to a minimum.
