2004 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

 I donít know whether itís me, the vintage character, or whether Randy Dunn and his son have intentionally softened their wines, but these 2004s are more opulent and up-front than previous renditions. Yet, they lack neither concentration nor richness. Those of us who have been cellaring Dunnís wines for twenty years, waiting for them to reach maturity should be thrilled by this new development. The Howell Mountain is denser and richer with blacker fruits as well as more body. Both are full-bodied, powerful Cabernets very much in keeping with his style. However, the tannins are softer and the wines reveal surprisingly developed aromatics. The 2004 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon should last for 20-25 years. It is a brilliant achievement.  Bright ruby. Urgent, high-pitched aromas of crushed cassis, minerals and licorice. Juicy, bright and pure, with sharply delineated flavors of cassis, bitter chocolate and licorice. Very lively wine with a firm underlying spine. Finishes with subtle building length and a fine dusting of tannins. Still quite tight and primary but not hard.  (5/ 2008)

Here we have a Dunn Howell Mountain Cab from a softer and more approachable vintage, for those of you who don't have the patience or the time to wait for the 2005 (or the 97, for that matter) but want an introduction to this classic California producer. Dunn is famous for tannic wines of great ageing potential, and though 04 is certainly structured, concentrated, and terroir-driven, it is a more more open-knit style and frankly awesome today. The supple cherry and cassis flavors on the mid-palate are framed by firm but balanced tannins and the wine constantly changes in the glass. This is something you could be safe opening tonight for a special occasion, but (as indicated by just how much better it gets with air), you could easily cellar this baby for a long, long time.

First of all, I am incredibly biased towards the wines of Dunn. One of my favorite wines ever was the 1987 Howell Mountain. What to say here? These are dense wines full of black fruits, anise, cocoa and cassis. While it is a mouthfull of wine in its youth, it will age magnificently for the next 20 years or more and morph into its trademark elegance. Well worth every penny.

Rich black fruit, light bodied and with a slight build up of brett, it still comes through as beautifully settled. A fantastic Cabernet, dare I say my favorite out of Napa Valley, is drinking well now but will continue to age beautifully over the next several years.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Mťdoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
