90 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky violet. Deep cherry and cassis aromas complicated by an array of floral, mineral and herbal nuances. Powerful dark fruit flavors are firmed by solid tannins and lifted by gentle minerality. Picks up smoked meat and anise notes on the long, chewy finish. This could be a Bandol. Is the average buyer at this price point ready for this? Another amazing value." (Sept/Oct 2007) 90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (No tasting note was given) (Feb. 2008) There are some wines that are out there that seem to always hit the nail right on the head. Year in, year out, they have the ability to wow you with their consistency and sheer deliciousness. The Bodegas Castano Hecula has always been one of these wines for me. As long as I have been drinking wine this has over-delivered in the value category. 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre) from Yecla, in the south-east of Spain, this is full of spiced beef, chocolaty oak and slick blackberry fruit. Lengthy, ultimately spicy at its core and with plenty of slick mouth coating fruit this will be sure to please. A pretty darn good deal for a sawbuck. (Bryan Brick, K&L)
