2005 Château de Montfaucon Côtes du Rhône

Just across the Rhône river from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this 88-acre estate is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a UC Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe (in Châteauneuf). This 2005 Cotes du Rhone is comprised of 50% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 15% Syrah, 10% Carignan and 10% Counoise. Violets and purple plum are followed by an explosion of red fruit jam on the palate. Incredible bargain for such a well made wine with nine years of cellar age! A great choice to have with lamb stewed until tender, over a pillow of polenta with a reduced pan sauce.

This has a lovely nose of cola and mushrooms with notes of dried leaves and dried raspberries. On the palate the complexities really come out with a solid core of raspberry fruit. There's still enough stuffing to keep this going for a few more years. A phenomenal steal when you factor in the cellaring and perfect provenance of this wine.

So, it is back! One of the best vintages of Montfaucon. It is a serious wine in a simple Côtes du Rhône disguise. Lots of cherries followed by a touch of that old world barnyard nose that we in the know, just about adore. On the palate it has cocoa, dried herbs, plums and sure, cherries. Excellent buy.

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
