Joe and Lidia Bastianich are more than great restauranteurs (their empire includes a number of ventures with Iron Chef Mario Batali, including Pizzeria and Osteria Mozza in Los Angeles), they also own Bastianich Azienda Agricola in Italy's Friuli. Located in the Colli Orientali area, the region is known for its unique terroir and world class white wines. The vineyards for this bottling are located in the villages of Buttrio, Premariacco and Manzano and they are all handpicked. Vespa Bianco is the flagship wine of the Bastianich estate, a blend of 45% chardonnay, 45% sauvignon and 10% late-harvest picolit, created to showcase the power and evolution of Friulian whites. Balanced notes of mineral and citrus with tones of wildflowers, clover honey and ripe pear characterize both the nose and palate of this wine. Powerful tannic structure reminiscent of a red wine and a strong acidic backbone create an immediate impact but will also allow this wine to age beautifully for the next 7-10 years.
