Syrah for 1/3 the original price! Ken and Katy Shaw's England-Shaw Vineyards in Solano County sits on a hilltop just 20 miles east of the Napa Valley. Made from 100% Syrah and aged in a combination of French and American oak (75%/25%), this wine comes across as an unusual hybrid of Australian and French-style Syrah, expressing the best of both worlds. The bold fruit is cradled by aromas and flavors of lavender, Applewood-smoked bacon, spicy black pepper, bittersweet chocolate, new saddle leather and roasted herbs. The 2004 scored 92 points in the Wine Spectator, which wrote of the 2005: "Firm and taut, with spicy berry notes and hints of beef and leather that are rich and trim, ending with herb and a twinge of bell pepper. Decant. Drink now through 2011."
