2001 Williams-Selyem "Rochioli Riverblock" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
The ’99 was a joy and so is this stunning wine. It has a perfume of violets, blackberries, dried autumn leaves, succulent raspberry tart, licorice, coffee, and all sorts of other wholesome scents. The flavors, which are similar, drink complete and complex, at once subtle and compelling. Absolutely addictive in its interesting complexities, and undoubtedly will improve with a few years in the bottle.

The 2001 Pinot Noir Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard (521 cases) is a spectacular effort. A striking nose of crushed rocks is intertwined with rose petals, as well as sweet black cherry, raspberry, and blueberry fruit. This seamless, rich, full-bodied wine was rocking the day I tasted it. Medium to full-bodied and well-delineated with crisp acids as well as sweet tannin that provides structure to its weighty, rich feel.

Good deep ruby-red. Subdued nose nonetheless hints at an exotic ripeness, with notes of cola, sassafras and tar to go with the dark fruits. Fat and rich but a bit youthfully sullen, and not yet showing the clarity of the Allen. Very ripe flavors of blackberry, plum and smoke. Big, oaky finish features ripe tannins and excellent length.
A rich, creamy, delicate style, with vivid blackberry, tea, creamy oak and fresh earth and mineral flavors that reveal its nuances sip by sip, finishing with firm tannins and a smoky edge.
