Endlessly quaffable, the Kalmuck Grüner Veltliner from Austria's Wachau region shows wildflower aromas, lively and animating balance of fruit and acidity and Grüner's characteristic white pepper note. From the grand 2006 vintage this is rich and vibrant; the best Kalmuck yet. This is a project of young Wachau wine grower Franz-Josef Gritsch in Spitz and is a blend of fruit from the steep terraced vineyards on primary rock near Spitz in the western end of the valley and the deeper, richer soils of Loiben at the eastern end of the valley. The two sites combine to produce a wine that is at once focused and mineral yet has added roundness, body and aromatic lift from the Loiben site.
