2005 Cantina di Gallura Vermentino di Gallura "Canayli" (Previously $15.99 last of vintage)

SKU #1027976

The wine is a brilliant straw-yellow color with a greenish reflection. The aroma is highly original, full and intense, and reminiscent of grapes themselves with a refreshing hint of grassiness. The taste is dry, full and warm, due to its strength and character. Produced by one of the best cellars in Sardinia, the "Canayli" is distinguished by a refreshing hint of green peppers and a full, warm taste. Obtained in limited qualities from vermentino grapes that grow in the vineyards of the Gallura highlands where the land is poor, coarse and of a granitic nature. Try it with smoked fish!

Last night I cooked up some linguini with olive oil, raw garlic, crushed red peppers, walnuts, chopped parsley and toasted breadcrumbs, and I enjoyed a few glasses of this Vermentino with it. The pasta was solid, but the Vermentino was smoking! Ripe, red appley nose, with a soft, fleshy palate of apples and melon. Some bitter melon and iodide on the finish. The time in bottle really fleshes this wine out; the flavors are simultaneously vibrant and minerally, while maintaining a slightly viscous texture. Vermentino di Gallura D.O.C.G. is located in the northern part of Sardegna, and this particular example is the Cantina di Gallura’s top-of-the line, from the granitic Canayli Vineyard.

I tasted this on a recent business trip to Milan. A colleague recommended we have this wine that went fabulous with our seafood and pasta dinner. I recall a fruity, light composure but not too sweet. A joy to drink.
