 Some people may enjoy this wine's rather fat, rich and powerful fruit now, but I still find it too young for drinking. Deeply colored, with smoky mint, tar and fruit aromas, full-bodied, with concentrated fruit flavors and plenty of tannins.  (6/ 1989)

 Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. The 1970, of course, is a powerful Fonseca with an exotic bouquet and lush, creamy, multidimensional flavors.  (7/ 2009)

When I say the 1970 Fonseca changed my life, a lot of people (rightly) laugh... But it is true. My father gave me a bottle for my 22nd birthday, it bit me hard with the wine bug and before my 23rd birthday I was working in the wine business. The industry has not been able to get rid of me since. Having a bottle of the Berry Brothers selected 1970 Fonseca in stock has been a constant source of temptation for me since it arrived. This was the last year it was legal to buy vintage port in pipe (barrel) and ship it to the buyer to bottle at their discretion. Nobody was better at this than the team at Berry Brothers, and every one of their bottlings that I have had has been that little bit better than the normal release. The idea of a 1970 Fonseca that is a little bit better than the one I had frightens me a little bit!
