1998 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
A beautiful Châteauneuf, with ripe fruit, thick texture, smooth tannins, and yet a fresh finish. Full-bodied, with plum, red berry, spice and wet earth. There is a sense of soil in this wine. (Web-2001)

Although the 1998 is not one of the vintage’s top successes, it is outstanding. It exhibits a certain hardness and austerity, along with sweet fruit, a layered palate impression, and a closed, firm finish. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018.

Deep red. Expressive, very complex aromas of plum, leather, animal fur, minerals and smoke, along with spice and kirsch notes from the mourvedre. Concentrated, smooth and penetrating, thanks to excellent acidity; fresh and youthful. Plenty of volume here, as well as the balance to reward aging (Avril believes the wine will close down for five to seven years). Strong youthfully spicy character. Finishes with fine, dusty tannins and subtle persistence. Doesn't offer the roasted aspect of the most headspinning '98s, but this is quite suave. (90+)
Another magnum from the Troisgros cellar and a lovely wine by any measure. Much paler than the Jamet 1999: mid ruby. Very sweet, broad, fresh and bright. The (doubtless considerable) alcohol was not too obvious. Well done! Very rich and round. Nice now. Fresh finish. Quite earthy. (18/20 points)
