2004 Domaine Beaurenard Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Elsewhere $35)
Lovely pure beam of red currant and red cherry fruit supported by hot stone and mineral notes. Hint of tobacco on the minerally finish. Should flesh out nicely in the near-term.

More classic in style, with aromas and flavors of black licorice, new leather, toasted spice and mulled cherries and blackberries, the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape (70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, 6% Cinsault and 4% other varieties, aged 12 months in foudre and barrel) is medium-bodied, clean and nicely balanced on the palate. Aging gracefully, and in a good spot, I’d recommend drinking it over the coming couple of years. (JD)

Bright red. Smoky red fruit aromas are complicated by espresso and chocolate. Fresh and precise, with bitter cherry and anise flavors supported by firm tannins. Bright, persistent finishing flavor of tangy redcurrant.
The Beaurenard is one of those double-take deals that will have you checking to make sure that we didn't misprice this wine. Don't worry, it is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape and it is under $20! There are so many great things to say about this wine, but most important is how nicely it has developed over the last few years since its release. The wine shows layers of red fruit, fig paste, tobacco, cedar and a touch of leather on the finish. A hint of potpourri on the nose and this wine sings. This wine is so versatile, it will pair well with Indian, Moroccan or Middle Eastern cuisines beautifully. (Keith Mabry, K&L Hollywood)
