A blend of three different single malts. Its name derives from the fact that the whisky is aged in American oak bodies with French Oak heads (a cross of both oaks). There’s no age statement, but the whiskies are all older than ten years. This is a gentle, subtly complex, somewhat lithe, easy drinking whisky (and with less oak spice than its predecessor, The Spice Tree). People think whisky is an after-dinner drink, but I think this would make a great aperitif because of its delicate dry spice notes and light body. I’m picking up evenly-proportioned notes of vanilla and coconut, with more subtle notes of clove, anise, and delicate fruit, all wrapped up in a gentle, malty body. A very versatile whisky. (Vol 16, #1)
From the distillery: "A malt whisky inspired by our travels to the forests of France. As you may know, we work with a small mill in France that makes some of the highest quality cooperage oak in the world. It was our workwith this mill that inspired an innovative idea that led to the creation of our malt whisky Oak Cross. At COMPASS BOX, we love the soft, sweet, vanilla-tinged character that aging our whiskies in American oak casks provides. However, our discoveries of the complex characters that aging with the best quality, new French oak provides have captivated us for several years now. Type: Malt Scotch Whisky (Vatted Malt) Lead Distilleries: Made entirely of Highland single malt whiskies led by Teaninich and balanced with malts from other distilleries from the villages of Brora (for fruitiness) and Carron (for weight). All the whiskies are aged approximately 10 years-old. Wood: All the whiskies are aged for their primary maturation in a mix of American oak cask types. The marrying casks are a mix of first-fill Bourbon barrels and our proprietary "Oak Cross" casks made of American and new French oaks.. Tasting Notes: A soft palate, with flavour notes of clove and vanilla, accenting a sweet maltiness and subtle fruit character. It's medium weight, with a long finish echoing hints of vanilla and clove. Bottling Details: Bottled at 43%. Not chill filtered. Natural colour. Guard filtered through a six-micron filter."
