2000 Jade Mountain Paras Vineyard "Block P10" Syrah (Was $75)

SKU #1021392

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Still plenty of grippy tannins in this wine, which has some Grenache and Viognier. But the astringency doesn't mask the huge flavors of black cherries and sweet oak. Displays pure mountain character of intensity and power. Drink now through 2010." (05/05). 90 points Robert Parker: "The outstanding 2000 Syrah Paras Vineyard Block P-10 may not be a great value, but it is a beautiful effort offering notes of blackberry liqueur, acacia flowers, forest floor, truffles, and espresso. It possesses good sweetness and richness as well as a broad texture, but it reveals a touch too much oak that still needs to be resolved. This attractive, complex Syrah should drink well for 6-8 years." (08/04) Reminiscent of a Côte Rôtie, this wine has a seductive nose of blueberry liqueur, baker's chocolate and spicy notes with a palate that combines dark fruits, minced meat, subtle touches of volcanic rock, Asian spice and hints of oak. The finish is long and supple with the wine gaining additional complexity as the bold flavors present on the front palate begin to recede. This wine has greatly benefited from the nine years of bottle age and is drinking wonderfully right now. (Alex Pross, K&L Wine Club Director)

Why to buy this wine: because it's $20, to see what Jade Mountain is like if you've never tried it, and now with some bottle age. Why not buy? It's not that great of a wine IMHO. I poured it last Saturday with three other comparable Cali syrahs. Guest say Jade came in 4th place behind Beckman, Copain, Amphora. Me? I'll take my $20 to a St Joseph wine and skip California altogether.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Shiraz/Syrah

- Syrah is the great red grape of the Northern Rhone, responsible for such fine wines as Hermitage and Cote Rotie. Big, dark and spicy, wines made from this varietal can age as well as Bordeaux. The varietal is gaining popularity in the United States as well as other countries. Since the 1970's, Syrah has spread throughout the Southern Rhone, and Provence regions of France, where it is being bottled as a single varietal wine or in blends. Syrah has also seen tremendous success in Australia where it is commonly called Shiraz (same grape, different name). Brought 'down-under' in the 1830's, Shiraz is widely planted through out Southeastern Australia. The wines range in style from fruity forward wines to big thick port like monsters. Shiraz is also frequently blended with Cabernet Sauvignon or Grenache. Here is a list of our bestselling Shiraz/Syrah
