Depend on Raymond to come out with balanced Cabs. This isn’t a soft, gooey, superripe wine. It's [sic] got its share of tannins and acids, and there's an earthiness to the blackberry flavors. But it's dry and complex, and should age well for a decade. (2/ 2006)
This 2002 Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet fills your nose with aromas of blackberry, cassis and dried cherries and a hint of earthy forest floor after a spring rain. On the palate your mouth is enveloped with ripe dark cherries, boysenberry, bits of spice and a touch of smoke. This is an elegant wine that is well-structured, complex and beautifully balanced. The tannins are lively enough to hold up to extended aging, but soft enough not to overwhelm the lush Rutherford and St. Helena fruit. The lingering finish is refined and satisfying. This Cabernet is an exceptional partner with food. With fruit and tannins that are in perfect harmony, this wine will bring out the best in steak with mushrooms or cracked black pepper, or a fine cut of prime rib.
