2003 La Gatte, Bordeaux Rouge

Made of 65% merlot, 25% cabernet sauvignon and 10% malbec. This wine was bottled on Feb 14th 2005, lightly fined and filtered, it retains its natural dark hue. This red is very young and tight so please let it breathe for a while in a large glass. Great aromas, deep cherry, touch of spice; classic Bordeaux, very pure. Can be drunk now or in 5 years. Will be very elegant around 2010. This property dates back to the 16th century!

I think this is one of the biggest sleepers in K&L's entire inventory! This is not another "tastes good young" Bordeaux, but rather a wine that received the 5 years of aging that it needed to become interesting (and has at least another five left to go). I love it for its honest earthiness, racy currant flavors and refreshing finish. It is just the sort Bordeaux that goes so well with a backyard grilled skirt steak or a tri-tip. Most Bordeaux blends in this price range are good enough when they are red, wet and low on flaws, but this really rubs the claret spot for me!

Opened this today on 1/1/2012. This bottle has definitely gone over the edge. The cork looked beautiful and smelled fine. Nice inky cork that usually portends something wonderful. Alas, the wine has a rusty sort of color and tastes rusty too. Not very good. If you have any of these start drinking them before they turn.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
