1995 Charles Heidsieck "Blanc des Millénaires" Brut Champagne

SKU #1018899 96 points Wine Spectator

Lovely and expressive, with the ethereal texture of fine silk, showing precise balance and integration and weaving together flavors of smoky toasted hazelnut, coffee liqueur, patisserie apple, candied ginger and a hint of white truffle. Fresh and vibrant, with a lasting finish. Drink now through 2027. (11/ 2012)

We have now tasted this 1995 in three consecutive years, and it continues to show as one of the best wines of the vintage. It has the broadness typical of many '95s, but none of the heaviness. Instead, it's surprisingly fresh, brisk, bold. Scents of leather and wood spices lend a masculine complexity to the finish, contrasting the vibrant acidity. Fairly priced for what is soon to be a 14-year-old wine, this is well worth stocking away in the cellar. (12/ 2008)

The 1995 Brut Blanc des Millenaires shows just how compelling this often overlooked vintage can be. Layers of lemon, pastry, spices, crushed rocks and savory herbs literally jump from the glass. An exquisite, perfumed, beautifully delineated Champagne, the 1995 shows lovely flavor complexity and nuance from its extended time in bottle, yet it also retains plenty of freshness, verve and acidity. This is a great showing from Charles Heidsieck. The 1995 was made before the tenure of the house’s current team, headed by CEO Cecile Bonnefond. It will be very interesting to see what develops at this historic property over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. (11/ 2012)

Vivid gold. Heady aromas of candied citrus fruits, flowers, truffle, gingerbread and iodine, with an intensely smoky overtone. Deep, pungent and palate-staining, with the orchard and pit fruit flavors reaching every corner of the palate and showing impressive power without any excess weight. Even more extroverted than last year's release, finishing with excellent cling and lingering smokiness. (10/ 2011)

*Editors' Choice* This 12-year old shows signs of maturity, but retains freshness and liveliness as well. With its yeasty edge, toasty flavors and wonderful white fruits all in balance, it is finely balanced. The acidity is kept in check by the richness of the mature fruit. A very complete Champagne. (12/ 2007)

Jancis Robinson

Fruit from Cramant, Avize, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and Vertus for floral notes. Aged for 15 years on the lees. Very rich and broad. 18/20 points. (6/ 2014)

K&L Notes

This spectacular bottle of Champagne is drinking better than any current release tete de cuvee in the store thanks to the patience of the folks at Charles Heidsieck. The supply is running out however, so if you want some of this great 1995 before it is gone, act quickly. This wine is all Chardonnay from the villages of Cramant, Oger, Mesnil and Vertus and has the butterscotch laced toastiness of Champagne that has been given the time that it needs to develop. The classy Cote des Blancs minerality balances out the richness perfectly, leaving the drinker refreshed and eager for more. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

Exactly what I want in special occasion Champagne - rich hazelnut cream, spicy baked apple, notes of honey and a wonderfully toasty overlay, yet it has great acidity and is still fresh - a wonderful balancing act. Perfect bubbles and silky palate texture, this is perfection in a bottle. Heidsieck has spent a huge amount of effort on quality across the range of their Champagnes, and this is absolutely spectacular!

One of my favorite things is old champagne. But I never seem to have enough in my cellar, so it's a joy to find a current release such a this on the market. 100% Chardonnay, rich and toasty, complex and long, this is a Don't Miss! sort of bubbly. Supplies are running low, and I hope it will last until New Year's. I am buying some now to be sure I have it laid safely away.
