No. 209 Gin From San Francisco 750ml

SKU #1018539 90-95 points Wine Enthusiast

The nosing passes find generous notes of citrus zest, juniper berry, orris root, licorice, coriander and angelica. The palate entry is bittersweet, intensely grainy and speckled with licorice and orris root; at midpalate the flavor turns delightfully herbal. Finish is decidedly herbal/leafy/seed-like and, finally, bittersweet. An adult gin with an adventurous attitude. (9/ 2006)

K&L Notes

No. 209 Gin is the brainchild of the Rudd family, who own both the Rudd Oakville Estate Winery and the gourmet market Dean & DeLuca. A departure from traditional, juniper-heavy gins, the No. 209 is citrusy, floral and spicy, with a slight minty hint on the mid-palate. Good for cocktails--from a simple martini to the Corpse Reviver (try Spoonbar mixologist Scott Beattie's version posted on with Cocchi Americano Old World Spirit's La Sorciere Bleue).

Leslie Rudd has always had a magic hand, whether as a midwest spirits distributor, owner of Dean and DeLuca, Rudd Vineyards creator, or with sponsoring No. 209.

The quality of this gin is astounding; mellow, clear in it's purity, subtle flavors and clean finish. Despite all the rhetoric about other handcrafted gins, whether English or US, this is simply and truthfully the very finest gin I have ever tasted. It is a sin to do more to it than pour a smidge over two ice cubes (a few drops of lemon for an exclamation point) and consume.

When I ran through my last bottle from K&L I went to other gins from both sides of the pond. They all left me feeling as though my best lover had left me. Fine but just not as great.

From a wine lover who rarely consumes distilled, don't miss this spirit. It is astounding!
