 The 2003 Numanthia was fashioned from yields of one ton of fruit per acre (from a clone of Tempranillo that often has the highest polyphenols of any Tempranillo clone). This cuvee is made from 70- to 100-year-old vines planted at a 2,300 foot elevation, which no doubt accounts for the freshness in this massively rich, intense red. A vivid, intense nose of espresso roast, pain grille, sweet black cherries, and creme de cassis is followed by a full-bodied, intensely-concentrated, rich, well-delineated, moderately structured, pure red that can be drunk young or cellared for a decade.  *Editors' Choice* Mammoth from the beginning. The nose practically bleeds black fruit, fine leather and charcoal. Calling the bouquet alluring would be conservative. In the mouth, the wine pumps black cherry, cassis and enough acidity to coax out plenty of complexity and vitality. Huge but not a clod, with finishing flavors of mocha and bitter chocolate.  Deep ruby. Brooding, imploded nose features dark fruits with inky notes of licorice root, espresso, soy and tobacco. Seriously structured, chewy wine, packed with dense, sweet cherry and dark berry fruit and mineral tones. Finishes on a deep note of cherry liqueur, the firm, broad tannins adding to the impression of power. Very impressive.  (10/ 2006)

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penčdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
