1997 Barolo Riserva Monfortino—Dark red. It appears that the early approachability of this wine was an illusion after all. My most recent bottle showed all the classic Monfortino notes of tar, licorice, roses, cocoa, and leather, with super-sweet dark fruit and notable concentration, but the open, generous quality that was present just a few months ago is diminishing, and this wine seems to be shutting down. Roberto Conterno confirmed that my impression is consistent with his naturally more frequent observations of this wine. (1/ 2006)
The standard-bearer for Barolo. Medium-dark ruby-garnet. Rose petals, mushroom and slightly cooked red fruit. Some earth. Full-bodied, with big, caressing tannins. This is mouthfilling. Touches all of your taste buds. Complex flavors of plum, orange peel and chocolate. (2007)
Good medium red. Superripe aromas of plum, redcurrant, tar, rose petal, meat and animal fur; this, too, is quintessential Barolo but in a riper register. Lush, thick and seamless in the mouth; expands inexorably to take over the palate. Finishes with thoroughly ripe tannins and great persistence. (12/ 2000)
