Talisker 18-year-old Isle of Skye Single Malt Whisky 750ml (Elsewhere $150)

SKU #1013991 90-95 points Wine Enthusiast

First sniffings boast big-hearted aromas of maple sugar and caramel; further aeration stimulates marine notes of seaweed and light brine, but deeper notes of chili pepper, black pepper, honey and vanilla top off the experience. Palate entry is honeyed and full; at midpalate the taste profile inches its way towards the smoke-tobacco-ash-tar side of the flavor scale, but is sweet. Concludes moderately oily and lightly salty. A sophisticated and refined Talisker, if thatís not an oxymoron. But this is certainly true when compared to the 10 year old. This 18 year old is deeper too, with less of the fishnets, more of oak boat docks. Less lemongrass, more fruit gum drops. Thereís still that knock-out punch on the finish. Thereís a fine line between polishing the rough edges of a beautifully powerful whisky and ripping its heart and soul out with a knife by dumbing it down. This whisky has not crossed that line. A fabulous whisky! (Vol. 14, #3)

K&L Notes

Limited to quantity on hand. This lovely 18 year old is always out of stock, so strike when the iron is hot! Strength: 45.8% ABV Appearance: Amber. Nose: Rich and fruity -- Victoria plums, greengages, perhaps dried orange peel -- with some butterscotch or rum toffee and a thread of smoke behind. The smoke soon advances into the foreground and the toffee note is joined by a light mintiness. With water maritime characteristics emerge -- dry boat varnish, edible seaweed. Still sweet; now with notes of iodine and the smokiness of an un-struck match. Body: Full. Pleasant, smooth. Palate: Sweet in front, then more assertive, with a whiff of smoke. The development is towards smoke, coal-tar and toffee. Finish: Medium length. Talisker's characteristic chili "catch" in the finish is subtly present in the smoky aftertaste.

Medium-light amber, and the smoked fish, the salty caramel, the chili pepper, it's all there...but does it seem a bit more subdued that the Distillers Edition? It does seem a bit more ashy on the palate; there's definitely a nice bit of heat on the back-end. As a fairly recent but hopelessly enthralled recruit to the Talisker regimen, I recommend the 18, for a one-time try-out at the least.

Diageo owns more than 20 of the best distilleries in Scotland and is famous for their mind-boggling catalog of single malts. In addition to their incredible line up of regularly available malts like Talisker 10, Lagavulin 16, and Oban 14, they hold back a reserve of special edition whiskies that are only available every few years when there is enough supply on hand. One of those malts is the incredible Talisker 18 Year Old. For the money, there may not be a better whisky value in the entire world. No joke. The delicacy of the fruit, the kiss of sweetness from the oak, and the gentle application of peat smoke are all on display and in perfect harmony with one another. Stonefruits, butterscotch, and campfire smoke all in one poetic burst of flavor. To me personally, it is one of the most perfect single malts I've ever had. Unfortunately, it is only available sporadically and I therefore have to carefully ration my one bottle so that I have enough to get me through until the next release. I'm happy to announce that the time for more Talisker 18 is now and we've bought as much as possible so that we have enough for everyone. This is one of the few single malts that I buy repeatedly, over and over again, because it's really that good and, compared to other 18 year olds, it's an absolute steal. - David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer

David-- I agree wholeheartedly: Talisker 18 is a long time favorite among friends and one of the rare scotches that remains both full of character, yet accessible by nearly any palate. It's a standard in my liquor cabinet, along with Caol Ila 18, Oban 14, Lagavulin 16, Glenlivet French Oak 15 and Auchentoshan Three Wood.

p.s. nice meeting you at the Good Food Awards.
