Laurent-Perrier Ultra Brut Champagne

SKU #1006280 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

(a roughly 50/50 blend of chardonnay and pinot noir; L53PZ110143): Light yellow. Tightly focused lemon/lime and quince aromas give way to deeper melon and nectarine with air. Shows impressive clarity and lift on the palate, offering bitter citrus pith and pear skin flavors and a hint of anise. Lingers with impressive tenacity, leaving notes of smoky minerals and sweet butter behind. (12/ 2013)

Smoke and sous-bois notes highlight hints of black licorice and currant pâte de fruit, with a moderate bead and a firm finish. Drink now. (Web-2013)

K&L Notes

The Laurent Perrier Ultra Brut is one of the very few Champagnes shipped naked, with no dosage (finishing sugar) at all. It is a very special blend, made only from exceptionally ripe harvests. This cuvee is based on the 1999 vintage, although not labeled as a vintage, and is composed of half Chardonnay and half Pinot Noir from exclusively grand cru vineyards. This Champagne is dry and precise without being strident or harsh. It has great chalky grip, a rich underlying yeast quality and finish that goes on forever. It is especially fantastic with sushi! The ultimate sushi Champagne! The Laurent Perrier Ultra Brut is quite austere Champagne, even though it was aged for over 10 years on the lees, but it comes alive when paired with raw fish. The precision of this wine will thrill you with everything from toro to unagi. Try it out, you won't be disappointed.
