2002 De Meric "Sous Bois" Blanc de Blanc Brut Champagne

SKU #1005242

We are very pleased to be able to offer Champagne from the great 2002 vintage, which is shaping up to be the best since 1996. This great harvest in Champagne has a lot in common with 1990, great ripeness, fresh acidity and clean flavors. This Champagne is made entirely from chardonnay grown in the Grand Crus of Avize, Oger and Cramant and it is entirely barrel fermented. The Champagne is a creamy, rich, seamless style with flavors of nuts and good Chardonnay minerality. It is one of our roundest blanc de blancs and a joy to drink right now. It is interesting to contrast it to the Bonville 2002 vintage, since they grew the fruit! -Gary Westby, K&L (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

What an amazing champagne! I was absolutely blown away when I stuck my nose in the glass. If you're a fan of Domaine Valette in Burgundy, this is your champagne. Incredibly complex nose that has already reached that covetted "bouquet" status. Earth, mineral, brioche, nut...all rolled into one harmonius deluge of aromas. The complexity that comes from this tiny little blanc de blanc from De Meric will smoke any grand marquis!

What a terrific bottle of Blanc de Blancs! People will sometimes float around the phrase, when describing some Chardonnay-based Champagnes, "Puligny-Montrachet with bubbles." Up until now I had never seen that, but with this richly textured, mineral, intensely flavored, oak aged bottle from our friends at De Meric, I'm going to have to say it: Puligny-Montrachet with bubbles. If you're a fan of broadly flavored, richer Chardonnay based champagne, you'll want to buy this.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Chardonnay

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, Mācon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. It is also extremely popular in California, and is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Africa.
