1990 René Collard "Cuvee Reservee Millesime" Brut Champagne

SKU #1003145

The late René Collard was born in 1921 in the heart of the Marne Valley. At 22, his father (who was a grower) saw his dedication to the family vineyards and gave him a little less than a hectare of vines in the village of Reuil. Since that time he has been making a tiny amount of the most unique Champagne in the world. He has slowly added to his estate- buying up choice vineyards in the villages of Reuil and Damery. His estate is just less than 7 hectares (17.5 acres) planted to about 90% Meunier and 10% Chardonnay. He had the good fortune of having an amazing cellar that is 25 feet deep at its shallowest and 75 feet deep at the far end... Here the wines that are now on offer have rested, at a perfect 8.5 degrees Celsius since the day they were made. Mr. René Collard only made a vintage wine in truly great years; the decade of the '80s saw two: 1982 and 1985 and the '90s only this one. This wine is composed of 90% meunier and 10% chardonnay all from the tiny organic estate vineyard that Mr. Collard owned. It was vinified in old-wood foudres (giant oval barrels) without malolactic fermentation for maximum freshness. This Champagne has a lot of flavor and complexity: white truffles, ripe melon and great length. Don't miss the opportunity to have one of the greats! (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne and Sherry Buyer)

Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and winemaking traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced.
