Tarlant "Brut Tradition" Champagne (Previously $40)

SKU #1002035

This rich, nutty Champagne has great texture and length. The varietal blend is Pinot Noir (50%), Pinot Meunier (35%), Chardonnay (15%) from estate vineyards in Oeuilly (Vallée de la Marne) on the hillsides. The Tarlant family uses organic practices in the vineyard- but they are very coy about calling themselves organic, no doubt due to the family's prominence in the vignerons association in Champagne. You can taste the masculine power of the Pinot Noir and red cherry fruit features prominently on the mid-palate. The house of Tarlant is one of a handful of 'cult' producers in Champagne, but unlike most 'cult' producers, they have been around since 1687. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer) 89+ points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Brut Tradition impresses for its drinkability and the sheer pleasure it affords. Despite being made from mostly red grapes, the wine is surprisingly nuanced, with a long, delicate finish that rounds things out in style... Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015." (12/09) 89 points Wine Spectator: "Loaded with toast, citrus, malt and mineral flavors, this full-throttle, lithe bubbly is backed by a crisp structure. Ends with a mouthwatering impression. Drink now through 2013." (11/10)

This Champagne house has been a favorite since Gary Westby introduced me to it over a dozen years ago. The Tradition is a superbly made dry style, excellent length, great yeast/acid balance and a wine that is always a pleasure. Shows a lot of red fruit character on nose and palate. Dosage is low so its crisp. Typically 3+ years on lees and a class above most commercial marques. My favorite wine for a celebration or just to have because you love good Champagne.
Drink from 2010 to 2015

Champagne

- The French region of Champagne (comprised of the towns of Rheims, Epernay, and Ay) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and winemaking traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range from the basic brut (often blends of several vintages), single vintage champagnes, and rose. View our bestselling Champagne.
