Krug "Grande Cuvée" Brut Champagne

SKU #100010 95 points Wine & Spirits

This is the best release of Grande Cuvée we’ve tasted in the last several years, a wine that lives up to its historical greatness with Burgundian richness and Champenoise complexity. It’s layered, intense, almost tannic in its grip, bringing high notes of chamomile and allspice to leaven the resinous butterscotch and chalk cave depths. A heady and immense multivintage blend. (12/ 2012)

95 points Wine Spectator

Very fine on the palate, with a lovely texture, carrying layered flavors of patisserie pear, dried apricot, smoked almond, crystallized honey and a hint of kumquat. Vibrant and mouthwatering, featuring a long finish of ground cumin and ginger. Drink now through 2022. (11/ 2012)

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Bright yellow-gold. Expressive, toasty bouquet of poached pear, white peach and orange zest, with toasted nut and anise nuances adding complexity. Dry and focused on the palate, offering ripe orchard fruit, buttered toast and ginger flavors that gain weight with air. Shows a suave blend of richness and tension, finishing with excellent clarity and lingering smoke, nut and gingerbread flavors. I'll bet that this Champagne will be even better with another five to ten years of bottle age. (12/ 2012)

94 points Wine Enthusiast

With its minimum of six years’ bottle aging, this is a beautifully integrated, mature wine. It has a wonderful toast character, layered over sliced pears and ripe acidity. With its complex poise between lightness and richness, this remains an intensely impressive wine. (12/ 2010)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The NV Brut Grande Cuvee emerges from the glass with freshly cut flowers, almonds, pastry and spices. This is a relatively floral, bright Grande Cuvee with fewer of the oxidative qualities that are typical of the house style. According to Krug's ID Code, this bottle is based on the 2004 vintage, which explains the wine's tense, taut personality. Another year or two on the cork will only help the wine gain expressiveness and depth. Today, the Grande Cuvee is quite reticent and not showing the full breadth of its personality. This bottle carries ID Code: 211024. Disgorged: Summer 2011.Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. (11/ 2012)

I was lucky enough to drink this last with Krug's CEO, Margareth Henriquez. Margareth explained the new codes on the backs of the bottles, that allow the Champagne lover to learn the disgorgement date, year of the base harvest of the wine as well as the number of vintages blended in and the oldest of them. She was far too modest about this new feature, as it reverses the secretiveness for which Krug has long been known. Now, thanks to her influence, Krug is one of the most transparent houses. The bottle that we had was from batch 311032, based on 2004, and composed of 121 different wines from 12 different vintages going all the way back to 1990. It was disgorged in the fall of 2011. All of this can be learned by going to www.krug.com and entering the code. Our bottle was Krug at its toasty, extroverted best, with plenty of buttery brioche and mid-palate weight. It also had typical 2004 zing and acidity, and showed attractive aspects of both youth and maturity.

In a tasting against 2003 Dom Perignon, 2004 Cristal, Ace of Spades, and Krug, this one came out on top for me. The oak gives this champagne a solid backbone, a great texture, and incredible nose, and it absolutely envelops the palate. This will be my go to champagne when money is not an option.

Because you can never be too rich...or have too many bubbles! This Grand Cuvee is truly grand - very concentrated, with a silky smooth texture and length for days. Drink it on your private island, while sitting on your treasure chest and eating a foie gras cheeseburger! (tasted 6/10/09)

I'm no pro, but I cut my champagne teeth through 4 masters of food and wine in carmel, ca. this champagne, when cold, presents lots of citrus. Serve this wine at 53 deg and watch it grow as it reaches room temp. The last two sips from your glass will be true Krug.
Drink from 2009 to 2050
