91 points and a Best Buy from the Wine Enthusiast: "This blend of Pinotage, Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc is full-bodied and complex, with layered aromas of cherry, banana and warming spices, and smooth, elegant flavors of cedar, cherry, tobacco smoke and red berries. Velvety, soft tannins and a clean finish give it a classy touch. The wine can age, but drink now and you won’t be disappointed." (12/09) Made from a very unusual but typical-for-South-Africa blend of 50% Pinotage and the rest Bordeaux varietals, this is a full bodied red with ripe, ... Read More »

Porcupine Ridge is a handcrafted range of wines, celebrated for its uncompromising commitment to quality. The wines carry a distinctive label featuring an original pen and ink of the crested porcupine drawn by leading South Africa wildlife artist, Zakkie Eloff. These crested porcupines inhabit the vineyards of the Boekenhoutskloof homestead. This newly released wine is called Syrah, not Shiraz, for a reason. It shares much in common with the Syrah based wines of the northern Rhone, especially the rustic and dark-fruited crozes hermitage. Wonderful with r... Read More »

Rich chocolate and Mocha aromas combine well with darker berries and subtle hints of spice. Soft juicy tannins, backed up with hints of vanilla and blueberries. The wine was left to mature for14 months in French oak, after which it received a light filtration prior to bottling. 89 points Wine Spectator: "Focused and ripe, with a nice winey core of red currant and black cherry fruit mixed with maduro tobacco, grilled herb and iron hints. Solid drive on the finish. Drink now." (05/10)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate had this to say: "After being assured that Graham Beck’s 2003 Syrah The Ridge (sourced from the Robertson district on the Western Cape) is indeed the current vintage in the marketplace, I was all the more surprised at how it has held up to time in the bottle. Scents of red raspberry, rose hip and saddle leather lead to a satisfyingly-concentrated, fine-grained, subtly smoky palate impression of cooked red fruits tinged with licorice, black tea, and vanilla. This finishes faintly stewy and warm (from its 14.5% alcohol) but ot... Read More »

Club Price: $8.9989 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 09: "($17; a 54/46 blend of pinot noir and chardonnay) Pale copper-tinged gold. Tangerine, spicy oak and a hint of exotic fruits on the nose. Fruity and harmonious, with a yeasty complexity adding depth to the fairly dense, harmonious middle palate. Comes across as sweeter and fuller than the Blanc de Blancs, but finishes dry and crisp, with a bit more length. No shortage of flavor here."

The wine has an intense, opaque deep ruby colour, very slight gradation to the rim. Bright and vivacious in the glass, very youthful. The nose is brooding and restrained at this stage, yet beginning to emerge with deep, dark fruit, cassis, plum and black cherry. There is a pronounced minerality on the nose with graphite, cedar smoke and cigar box bouquet. The palate is beautifully structured, fuller bodied than some earlier vintages of Rubicon due to the intensity of the fruit and intricate tannin structure. The wine exhibits rich juiciness and savour a... Read More »

This spectacular wine offers serious bang for the buck compared to Sauvignon Blancs the world over. The 2008 got 90 points from Stephen Tanzer, who had this to say: "Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 09: "Gooseberry, pepper, fresh herbs and licorice on the nose and palate. Vibrant and varietally accurate; at once rich and gripping, with uncompromising dryness. Finishes brisk and perfumed, with lively hints of lemon peel and quinine. This historic estate is located only 45 minutes drive from Cape Town and is situated near the Cape's famous Wine Routes. Pinotage is the flagship wine here, and though you may have read disparaging things about the grape, one taste of this 2008 will soon convert you! Spicy and brambly, with dark berry notes and a hint of chocolate and coffee, this red is great with rustic foods like burgers and grilled steaks. 91 points and Editors Choice from The Wine Enthusiast: " The label reads "The Original coffe/chocolate Pinotage" and boyare they right. This wine knocked me out when I first tasted it, and to my delight, when our Rhone buyer Mulan Chan-Randel had it at our staff tasting., she was equally impressed. The bouquet is lifted with very Northern Rhone-like notes of smoked meats, game, garrique, blackberries, pepper, camphor, dark chocolate and a hint of lavender. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, on the palate the wine has good acidity and a fine tannin structure. This very cool Syrah from Swartland, which seems to be the homeland in South Africa for Rhone varietals, is an Old/New World wine that... Read More »

Hamilton Russell was the first wine estate planted in Walker Bay, founded by Tim Hamilton Russell in 1975 and since that time has carved out a reputation for producing wines that straddle the old and new worlds. In 1994, Anthony Hamilton-Russell founded Southern Right Cellars as a Pinotage specialist, convinced that Pinotage has the intrinsic qualities to produce truly world-class wine with a distinct South African expression and typicity. As an early ripening grape, it was Anthony’s belief that Pinotage will perform best in cooler, maritime areas, where... Read More »

Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz was born out of the realization that there are not a lot of options available to consumers seeking quality sweet red wine. This fresh, fruity, semi-sweet Shiraz aims to fill that void. Made with the classic blend of Bordeaux varietals, the wine is comprised of 54% cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec and 4% Petite Verdot. A red wine created to celebrate the distinct palates of Ernie Els (Bordeaux style) and Jean Engelbrecht (Shiraz-based style) to crown their new venture. The EE vineyards are located high up on the northern slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. This contribution imparts warmer fruit flavours to the wine. In summer, the vineyards’ close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean result in cool sea breezes that keeps temperatures lower, extending the ripening period. Strange that Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling hit it so big time on the wine scene, but Semillon is still a relative unknown. It offers lots of those same flavors: green apple notes with a strong citrus character. And it has gobs of acidity when done right, as this one from Boekenhoutsloof certainly is. Can be aged, too, but why bother when it's so open and elegant now, especially when paired with classic fish dishes like trout almondine.

The name Mount Bullet originates from Bullet Bay on the ocean side of the mountain range. It is here that the round granite rocks when rolling back and forth in the surf zone bang against each other creating the effect of bullets being fired. The vineyard has unique low vigour soils for a cool climate. Incorporating monthly leaf plucking, strict low yield policies and yes, a little more effort in the vineyard, a distinctive wine is produced that speaks for itself.
