Great wines at very good prices. That is what you get from Foxglove. This is a side project from Bob and Jim Varner, who bring us the great wines from the Varner and Neely labels. The Foxglove Cabernet is amazingly well balanced. Beautiful black and blue fruits with nicely integrated tannins and just a hint of fig and earth. A lot of wine for $13.99. Angel Rodriguez Leal produces what is hands down the best wine in Rueda, Martinsancho. A family owned bodega since 1784, the family holds some of the best real estate in the D.O. Their land boasts verdejo vines which average 40 years of age and stand in a bed of rounded river stones. Wine is fermented in enamel tanks and aged in very large, neutral oak 'cubas.' Sergeant Classick 100% Hawaiian Rums are made from molasses from the last remaining sugar mill on Kauai. It is shipped here to the San Francisco Bay. The Classick family picks up the molasses themselves to insure that is from Hawaii. It is then fermented with special yeast used just for Rum production and distilled in a beautiful copper Alambic still. The still was hand crafted by Jean-Louis Stupfler, a third-generation distiller in Bordeaux, France. In my mind this wine is the value Rioja version of our wildly popular 1997 Langoa-Barton. Why do I say that? Like the Langoa, this comes from a cooler, challenging vintage and is produced by a somewhat under the radar producer (perhaps a little more under the radar in this case). However, like the Langoa this wine has aged amazingly well, due to its impeccable balance and high acidity.
