There is a dark place on Islay, high above the Ardbeg Distillery, called Airigh Nam Beist (pronounced "arry-nam-bayst"), which in Gaelic means "shelter of the beast." No more fitting name could have been bestowed on such an eerie place; this is where - legend has it - something other-worldly lurks, lying in wait. So what measures can be taken to protect local and visitor alike? If you find yourself straying this way, then pray equip yourself with that traditionally reliable antidote to sheer terror - the stiff drink. A travelling man could ask for no bet... Read More »

Delicious whisky from one of the Spey's lesser known distilleries, this expression is bottled at cask strength and has a tremendous nose that leans towards the earthier aromas with hints of honey. The palate starts with a touch of sherry wood sweetness then the power of the undiluted malt comes through on the mid. The flavors are intense, almost like a cask strength bourbon, but the finish is loaded with dried fruit and spice. This is the March of single malts - in like a lion, out like a lamb. Very, very tasty.

This is an amazing vatting, which was aged as a vatted malt from 1990 until bottling. Normally vatted malts are blends of aged whiskies which are vatted, bottled and sold immediately. This was vatted, then aged again in bourbon barrels for 15 years. The youngest whisky in the blend in 19 years old and the flavor is fantastic. I was very impressed and so was my whisky-loving manager Alex Br... Read More »

This is a beautiful cask strength bottling of Mortlach that really gets to the heart of the malt, rather than relying on cask finishing like we've seen so often with the Murray McDavid bottlings. Loads of fruit on the entry with biscuit notes and a subtle hint of grain give way to sweeter flavors on the finish with traces of coconut. A very distinguished malt at a very reasonable price given the specs.

A soft, and supple entry leads into nice richness in the mid-palate with just a kiss of sweetness. The body is med/full and the white fruits slowly appear towards the back. The whisky is floral on the finish with absolute perfect balance throughout. Mannochmore gets its water from the Mannoch Hills and was established in 1971-2. It was originally founded to provide for the Haig blends, but became available as a single malt in the mid 1990s.
