Quite possibly our favorite Pinot under $20. This is not a thick syrupy version of Pinot, but if you're a fan of balanced and delicate (and delicious) Pinot Noir we highly recommend grabbing a bottle. It comes from one of the top pinot producers on the Central Coast. Jim Clendenen makes great wine vintage after vintage, using exceptional fruit even in this entry-level beauty. Easy to drink with strawberry and plum notes, good texture, acidity and fruit. Good pinot for $20? Believe it. The Wine Spectator writes: "Floral, perfumed and peppery berry arom... Read More »

From Wine Spectator: "Offers baked cherry pie, with rhubarb and blueberry, showing a wonderful fruit profile that's spicy, elegant and easy to drink. Great balance. Drink now. 35,000 cases made." (Web only, 2009) When James Laube blogged about Redtree Pinot Noir, we were all left sitting with cartoon-y question marks floating above our heads. Redtree? But for once Wine Spectator actually put a wine on our radar before their score and review made it scarce. Usually it is exactly the opposite - by the time Spectator or Parker or any of the myriad of other... Read More »

Bacchant Wines, the title of the collaboration between Master Sommelier Sara Floyd and the Pisoni family, bring you this incredibly tasty and wildly affordable Pinot Noir. From fruit sourced through the Pisoni family's deep connections in the Santa Lucia Highlands and made by Jeff Pisoni, the winemaker for Lucia, this is one Pinot this season that can't miss. The densely fruited nose is packed with red cherry and framboise tones, all the while a subtle lace of black pepper runs through the aromatics of the wine. On entry the wines comes of as ripe, yet i... Read More »

Sometimes a great wine pops up when you least expect it. This bottle has a lot to overcome in the US market; the fact that people don't necessarily think of Germany for great value Pinot Noir, the fancy, hip, label depicting a woman's corset being "undone", and the fact that it is $10.99 AND imported. To be honest I had little hope but again here we are... Much like the Bernier Chardonnay we have been selling the heck out of this wine exceeds its humble beginnings. The Undone Pinot Noir is all about fun, easy drinking pleasure. Bottled with a screw c... Read More »

This delightful Rosé sparkling wine comes from Burgundy. It is made of 80% Pinot Noir, and 20% Gamay Noir. The charming eye of the swan color comes from the addition of Pinot Noir to the wine when the lees are disgorged, following the traditional fermentation in the individual bottle, in the champagne method. On the palate it is very rich and fruity but just off-dry on the finish. The mousse is explosive, with a very creamy palate impression. It shows just a hint of the earthiness of a Pinot Noir from Burgundy. This is charming rosé, subtle and deligh... Read More »

91 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red. Fresh red berries and Asian spices on the nose, with notes of rose and magnolia adding complexity. Lively and precise in the mouth, showing nervy redcurrant and strawberry flavors and a pungent floral quality. Finishes with very good seamless length and a strong echo of sweet red berries." (Nov/Dec '09) The new Verna's Estate Pinot Noir is a perfect example of the frugal drinkability Melville has to offer. Even better than the 2006! The 2007 Poppy is made from a combination of Arroyo Seco, Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey County pinot noir, but there were no notable heat spikes to throw off even ripening. Like its predecessor, though, there's tons of vibrant pure fruit on the nose and palate, with hints of spice for intrigue. An affordable, everyday drinker!

Another screaming deal from New Zealand! I bought the last 25 cases or so of this delightful elegant Pinot Noir from Wairarapa on the south end of the North island. The wine has a pretty nose with strawberry, cherry, clove, forest floor and some mineral notes. On the palate their are moderate, soft fine tannins and a juicy mouth-feel with good length. This won't last long at this price, and it's a perfect wine for your Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Jim Chanteloup K&L New Zealand Wine Buyer.

With all due respect to the viticultural community in the Golden State, no one is making Pinot Noir this tasty and true to the varietal for this low a price, or even several bucks more. Located in the cool climate, coastal region of the Casablanca Valley, Casas del Bosque was named a value winery of the year by Wines & Spirits Magazine. From the International Wine Review: "This is a good value, entry level Pinot Noir showing a medium ruby color and aromas of mushroom and earth with a violet note. (April 2009) One of our go-to pinots when we're looking for something tasty that won't break the bank. Every vintage of A to Z Pinot Noir delivers and the 2007 is no different. The 2008 Sherwood Estate Pinot displays ripe, sweet plum notes with an edge of complexity on the nose. The palate is rich and round supported by fine grain tannins. An excellent match for most meat dishes. This Cazar Pinot comes from the Russian River Valley and was aged for 10 months - half in new 60-gallon French oak barrels and half in smaller French barriques. Lower in alcohol than many Pinots these days, this wine is balanced and full of fresh fruit and complementary spice. Made by Bill Hunter who, I've said before and I'll say again, is one of my favorite winemakers in California, this is the long lost sister bottling to his Chasseur label. This has lovely fruit, and lots of charm. This is one of the real values in Burgundy today. This appellation is common to a number of villages, all situated in the Côte de Nuits region : Brochon, Fixin, Premeaux-Prissey, Corgoloin, Comblanchien. It is an interesting wine combining the different characteristics of the various "terroirs" : fairly soft and rich wines in the South to more tannic wines with a strong structure in the North. Pinot Noir is the only grape variety used for this appellation.

This Pinot Noir is intense and elegant on the nose, red currant and strawberry are the highlighted tones. To the palate, its soft tannins mix with toasty hints that arise from being aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, making it a round and lingering finished wine with medium persistency. According to Wine Spectator: "This offers a mix of tasty crushed red and black cherry fruit laced with spice and cocoa hints. There's a nice lingering whiff of black tea on the lightly firm finish. (10/09) According to Robert Parker: "The Pinot Noirs include the very good 2007 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, which exhibits crisp, plum, cherry, and allspice characteristics along with good body and an attractive, fragrant style.
