Champagne
Here you'll find all the familiar and famous producers at very competitive prices, but even more exciting is the smaller grower-producers that we offer. K&L imports many of these grower-producer Champagnes directly, saving you a bunch of money that would otherwise end up in the pocket of an importer or distributor. The folks are able to control the entire process of making their Champagnes, since they do the vineyard work as well as the winemaking. In addition to the Champagne selection shown below, we operate a Champagne Club that you don't want to miss.

93 points Wine Spectator: "Complex aromas and flavors of rose, grilled nuts, citrus and a gently oxidative note course through this muscular, full-bodied bubbly. Despite its power, there's a gracefulness. The aftertase combines citrus and spice. Drink now through 2008." (11/04) K&L's notes - A Pinot Noir dominated blend that always includes a generous proportion of reserve wines. The biggest and boldest of the big house non-vintages, this is still made from mostly estate fruit. All of the reserve wines are aged in magnums under natural cork, and a large... Read More »

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A full, ripe creamy wine with a fine balance between fresh red berries and pink grapefruit crispness. There is spice, followed by a mouthful of complex berries, red plums and a firm texture. This is already delicious, but could certainly age over several years." (12/1/2008) Not exactly an unknown name in Champagne, right? You might assume that due to Clicquot's size, its wines are generic, safe and designed for the masses. But not this sexy sparkler, not by a long shot. First, beginning with the lovely smoked salmon color, ri... Read More »

Half bottles of Champagne are a terrific thing to have on hand, but nothing suffers worse from poor storage. These bottles come straight from Bonville in Avize to our air conditioned warehouse on a refrigorated container... It does not get any fresher! The direct pricing dosen't hurt either! All of the fruit comes from the Bonville's own vineyards in the marvelous Grand Cru of Avize. It is all Chardonnay blended from three sensational years: '96,'97 and '98. This Champagne has exotic, ripe fruit aromatics and as the glass warms up there are also traces o... Read More »

The Moutard-Dilligent family has a lot of experience growing grapes and making wine in Champagnes Cote de Bar area- they have been doing it since the 1600's! This very tasty Champagne is a blanc de noir made entirely from Pinot Noir harvested from vines of 10 to 20 years old and given three years of ageing on the lees. In the glass it has a pale color with a hint of gold from the Pinot Noir and a slow, spiraling bead. The wine is very savory on the nose, and reminds me of Cotes de Beaune Burgundy with Champagne brioche integrated perfectly into the aroma... Read More »

This fantastic wine comes from a small, sandy plot on the Tarlants estate in the village of Oeuilly. The vineyard was planted in 1962 without the use of an American rootstock; in the 1950's the area was covered in trees with wild, pre-phyloxera vines growing up them! These vines, now planted in rows, but still only on their own French roots, give us a glimpse of what Champagne was like before the phyloxera louse wrecked havoc on the region. The Vigne d'Antan has a very rich Chassagne-Montrachet like nose that combines cream, honey and minerals. In the mo... Read More »

A nice little half bottle! This new husband and wife Champagne house is the product of two venerable Champagne families. Olivier Collard is the grandson of the great Rene Collard in the village of Reuil, one of the most respected and venerable recoltant-manipulant's in all of Champagne. His wife, Delphine Picard, is the cousin of Chantal Gonet of Champagne Phillipe Gonet in Mesnil. Their heritage gives them access to some of the best fruit in the entire Champagne region. This is spectacular rose- perhaps the best non vintage rose that I have ever had, and a great argument for the blenders art. It is composed of 14% Meunier, 24% Chardonnay and 62% Pinot Noir. It is part of that Pinot, that makes up 5% of the blend in total that makes the wine so special- vinified as red wine and barrel aged, it comes from Bollingers old estate vineyards in Ay and Verzenay. Concentrated yet completely effortless, this barrel fermented gem has everything one could want from a rosé Champagne. The power is in the wine, but always takes a back... Read More »

Champagne Philippe Gonet is a 43 acre estate with vineyards from Mesnil (where their house and facility is located), up to Chigny Les Roses, out to the west of the Valley of the Marne and down to the Aube. Managed by Chantal, Denise and Pierre Gonet, the family has been making estate bottled Champagne since the 1800's, and they have the old bottles to prove it! 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A wine that shows an airy character. It is very open and fresh, the white fruits floating over a creamy texture and made crisp by grapefruit skin and bitter orange flavors. But it is just beginning to develop its potential, and the wine will likely fill out, as secondary flavors come through over the next 5-6 years." The Cazal family is justifiably proud of its holdings in Champagne, which include a goodly portion of Grand Cru vineyard in the Cotes de Blancs. Chardonnay is what Cazal knows best, and this vintage bubbly, primarily Chardonnay, is bright and minerally with fresh notes of green apple and citrus.

This might be considered Marguet's top wine, and the secret behind it sounds simple. Unlike most rose Champagnes this is neither a saignee method whereby dark grapes are kept on the skins for a short time, after which the juice is bled off, not by the addition of still red wine, but by a combination of the two! In this case, the red comes from Ambonnay and Bouzy. The result is richer, more aromatic and just plain more wonderful rosé Champagne. A very celebratory wine from the color down to the finish, and it just happens to be delicious with turkey!

From the masters of Champagne without dosage - the Tarlant family - comes a rosé with no dosage! This wine is composed of 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Noir, making it the rosé with the highest proportion of white grapes in the entire store. The red wine is sourced from a very steep site in the Aisne department called the Fourachaux, and has enough power to make this rosé in every way - not just in its perfect salmon color. The nose has a subtle toast that reminds me of waffles, but it also has a creaminess and a cherry fruit from the Pinot. On the palate... Read More »

Champagne always tastes best out of Magnum! This is Tarlant's top of the line wine, and one of the best Champagnes we carry regardless of price. It is made of half Chardonnay and half Pinot Noir from the chalkiest portion of the Tarlant families hillside vineyards in Oeuilly (Vallée de la Marne). The Tarlant family uses organic practices in the vineyard- but they are very coy about calling themselves organic, no doubt due to the family's prominence in the vignerons association in Champagne. Dry as dry can be, and all the more tasty for it! This is a new cuvee without any make-up, that is without any dosage at all. It was made from 100% chardonnay from Le Mesnil and Montgueux, the latter being the best cru of the Aube, the southernmost part of Champagne. It is a tremendously nervy wine, best enjoyed with oysters!

Many generations of the Lallement family have devoted themselves to the growing and making of fine Champagne, specifically on the côteaux of Chaméry, the one of the better slopes of Champagne. Ideally situated between Peims and Epernay, the family vineyard consists of 7 hectares on the mountain of Reims. This cuvee is 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier and 20% Chardonnay, and it is perfect as an aperitif, offering equal amounts of complexity and elegance, with pretty amazing lightness and balance all at a price we can all afford this holiday season!

This is a real deal Champagne from Courteron, a village in the Aube department of Champagne, closer to Chablis than the city of Reims! Their methods are as Burgundian as their location. They are biodynamic, too, the strictest form of organic viticulture. The assemblage of several pinot noir vines from different years results in a very expressive and intense Champagne. Fruity and delicate, this very elegant and long-lasting Champagne is classic, smooth and quite rich in style. Mr. Fleury's obsession with quality shows through in the wine; it is the most...
