French Wine
When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

Domaine de Mayran is a small biodynamic estate run by brothers Frederic and Bernard Duseigneur who are fifth generation vignerons from the Rhone Valley. This 2007 grenache based Rhone posesses generous amounts of deep red fruits, along with just a hint of spice and white pepper. The tannins are ripe and fine, making this elegant red the perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of mediterranean inspired dishes. Delicious, well priced and bio-dynamic? Yes, it's almost too good to be true, but it is! 14% abv.

The Perrin family owns vineyards within the best terroirs of the Southern Rhône Valley. Amongst these are the plots that produce such famous wines as the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Château de Beaucastel, Beaucastel’s Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, the Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet, the Vinsobres Les Cornuds, or the Château du Grand Prébois, which produces the bulk of the Côtes du Rhône Perrin Réserve. This is year-in-and-year-out one of the best Rhone values, red or white. Full, bright and very alive on the palate, this is brimming with peach and lemon peel aromatics, w... Read More »

The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage, when Franck and Betty Millet drove from Sancerre to Beaune (a long way) to meet Clyde and crew to present the wines. The wines were great even in that tough vintage, and the rest is history. We love these wines for their freshness, charm and affordability, and this is easily our best value Sancerre in the store. We are directly importing several spectacular wines from a tiny domaine in the hills of Mâcon in a town called Vergisson. Denis Barraud has a tiny estate called Domaine des Nembrets. This St. Veran comes from his estate vineyards on the slopes of the Roche de Vergisson, a giant basalt monolith, surrounded by complex and folded rocky, well-drained soils with limestone outcroppings. A wine with tiny, long-lasting bubbles, De Chanceny's Cremant de Loire Rosé is a lovely gleaming pink, enticing with a delicate, nervy nose and aromas of fresh red fruit. Bright and cheerful, with very pretty red fruit notes, this is simply charming. This has lovely fruit, and lots of charm. This is one of the real values in Burgundy today. This appellation is common to a number of villages, all situated in the Côte de Nuits region : Brochon, Fixin, Premeaux-Prissey, Corgoloin, Comblanchien. It is an interesting wine combining the different characteristics of the various "terroirs" : fairly soft and rich wines in the South to more tannic wines with a strong structure in the North. Pinot Noir is the only grape variety used for this appellation.
