Domestic Wine
When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural regions within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows and glasses to be raised around the world. We've been selling domestic wines since 1976 and all three of our stores are located in California, so it's safe to say that this territory has a special place in our heart. Take a look...

Great stocking stuffers! From Robert Parker's "Value Issue:" "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon from the Amber Knolls area is a good value Cabernet showing black currant fruit with some cherries, spice, and earth. This is an attractive wine with good ripeness and certainly a fair price. These are value-priced wines from one of the Beckstoffer family who has planted vineyards up in Lake County." 92 points and one of the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Sturdy, ripe and generous, with a surprisingly soft edge to the explosive black cherry, currant, black olive and smoke flavors, lingering effortlessly on the big, round finish. Best from 2010 through 2018." (06/09) The Canoe Ridge Estate was planted in 1991 and, at 18 years old, it's really starting to hit its stride. The steep, south-facing vineyard on the banks of the Columbia River is protected from extreme temperatures, allowing the fruit to mature slowly and evenly. The site's influe... Read More »

This Chardonnay is light straw in color with a youthful greenish hue and excellent clarity. The rich, inviting nose shows bright tropical fruit notes. This vibrant tropical fruit continues on the palate with flavors of pineapple and honeydew melon, complemented by refreshing acidity. A "throwback" Zin. No jammy, sweet, mouthcoating flavors here. No searing alcohol. Just a rock solid Old World-styled Zin bursting with flavor. The tangy, fresh raspberry and cranberry fruit flavors belie the wine's age, leading to a much snappier version of Zin than most are used to. Add some cracked white pepper, dried tobacco, marjoram and cinnamon stick flavors and this becomes much more complex and drinkable than about 90% of the Zins on the market. If you want to taste a slice of Zin history, this is a perfect wine for you. If you like Zin that tas... Read More »

This is the Hedges Estate flagship wine, blending fruit from their three estate vineyards: Hedges Estate, Bel'Villa and Red Mountain Vineyards. The 2006 is composed of a majority merlot and cabernet sauvignon, with small amounts of cabernet franc and syrah for added complexity. The wine has an intriguing nose of blackberry, plum and cherry with hints of cantaloupe in the background backed up by a chorus of toasty oak spice. Medium-bodied with velvety tannins and balanced acidity, the wine already delivers the complexity of its bouquet on the palate and s... Read More »

According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Light, bright yellow. Fresh apple, fig and tangerine on the nose, with a kiss of vanillin oak adding depth. Pliant orchard and pit fruit flavors are given tangy lift by citrus peel and dusty minerals. The fruit is a touch sweet but the wine's minerality helps it maintain focus and energy." Club Price: $14.49Fans of buttery, rich California-style chardonnays will love the new vintage of Sonoma-Cutrer's Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. Complete malolactic fermentation done entirely in barrel give this wine its texture and its oaky profile. Like a tropical breeze, the wine has spicy ginger, coconut, melon and white flower aromas on its nose. The aromas repeat again in the mouth, all pinned down by a zingy pineapple note. Try with a tangy cheese, like fresh chevre, or on its own. According to Wine Enthusiast: "Here's a rich Chardonnay. It's upfront in pineapple pie, pe... Read More »

The 2007 California vintage is revealing itself to be quite impressive. The Wine Spectator's Jim Laube wrote this spring (2009): "I expected 2007 to be a great year for California wine, and indeed it's shaping up that way across the board for all varietals...What made 2007 so good is that one the winter rains stopped, spring was dry, the set was good and winegrowers were able to farm the vineyards the way they wanted to. The growing season was dry, warm and mild, with a harvest that came off with few hitches." With this in mind, and their impressive sho... Read More »

This Cazar Pinot comes from the Russian River Valley and was aged for 10 months - half in new 60-gallon French oak barrels and half in smaller French barriques. Lower in alcohol than many Pinots these days, this wine is balanced and full of fresh fruit and complementary spice. Made by Bill Hunter who, I've said before and I'll say again, is one of my favorite winemakers in California, this is the long lost sister bottling to his Chasseur label. This 2005 edition is filled with outgoing fruit redolent of black-berries, raspberries and sweet cream in both nose and mouth, and its rounded texture receives solid support from the wine's moderate but unmissable tannins. Great color, deep, dark garnet with a clean and bright red band in the rim. The aromas take a minute to come up, and then they take off into a blend of ripe berry and cherry with just a hint of new oak. We age the wine in both new and seasoned French and American oak. The front of the wine is soft and almost immediately begins evolving into the broad mid-palate. The mid has weight, length, and structure.
