Imagine you have just shared a date with George Clooney (or maybe Catherine Zeta Jones). How could you go out with a mere mortal ever again? After trying Marisa Cuomo's Fiorduva, other white wines pale in comparison. Cantine Marisa Cuomo is a small winery located in Furore on the Amalfi Coast, where the vines grow on terraced slopes teeming with lemon and fig trees and peregrine falcons still nest. The Fiorduva, named for the Fjord of Furore, is a blend of three indigenous grapes: 30% fenile, 30% ginestra and 40% ripoli harvested late into the season. Fr... Read More »

The 2006 Selvagrossa Trimpilin is 100% sangiovese and is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks where it remains until after the malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged in barrique for 16 months. Selvagrossa’s first production for the Trimpilin was in 2002 and in this 2006 vintage, 250 cases were produced. The wine is really beginning to blossom now; the sangiovese’s tight core of cherrylaced flavors is gradually uncoiling to show this wine’s strident purity. In the mouth the wine is spicy, full of complex fruit and hints of vani... Read More »

Etna Rosso is made of Nerello Mascalese, with the permitted addition of up to 20% Nerello Cappuccio, of which Ciro Biondi takes full advantage. This shows an almost Burgundian combination of finesse and substance, leaving a wonderful lingering impression on the palate . The enologist here is Salvo Foti, also from Etna, whose respect for the indigenous flavors of the mountain is evident; the wine shows no overt oak, only excellent, clean and balanced winemaking. This wine has far more weight and complexity than you'd expect from the relatively pale color... Read More »

According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Sauvignon Terlaner reveals a typical varietal bouquet wedded to a fairly ripe expression of apricots, peaches, and flowers. This mid-weight, steely Sauvignon possesses lovely balance if not quite the harmony of the Weissburgunder. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012." Love the cocoa, berry and light vanilla bean aftertaste. This is always classic in an outstanding year. Best from 2010 through 2015." (Web only, 2009) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "...Montosoli is a tremendous wine with impressive intensity and staying power that takes shape as cherry, tobacco, spice and bursting blueberry. Marzemino Gentile is one of the most interesting grape varieties of Trentino. Known as the Mozart wine (as mentioned in Don Giovanni) is typical of the area of Ala and Rovereto where the soil has a characteristic basaltic rocks and therefore full of manganese. The wine has medium size body, a dark ruby almost purple color but with a delicate and unmistakable nose of violets. The taste is fragrant of wild cherries and bilberries. Perfect with pasta with mushrooms and red meat with potatoes.

95 points Robert Parker "The 2001 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is stunning in the way it has acquired tons of complexity over the years while remaining fresh and perfumed. High-toned, balsamic aromatics meld into layers of cherries in liqueur, menthol, fresh mint, spices, sweet herbs and flowers as this remarkable wine opens up in the glass. Despite its size and opulence, the wine has maintained essential inner clarity and precision, qualities that are very hard to come by in this style of Vin Santo. (06/09) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Bright and fruity aromas of strawberries and raspberries follow through to a full body, with firm tannins and a racy, clean finish. Tight still. 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "The 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is one of the more reticent wines in this lineup of 2004 Riservas. Its vibrant, fresh color is followed by notes of violets, roses, black cherries, menthol, smoke and licorice. The wine possesses tons of structure and sheer muscle behind the fruit, suggesting this will be an especially long-lived Barbaresco. In recent vintages I haven’t been the biggest fan of the Montestefano, but this superb 2004 is impossible to resist. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024." (10/08) 91-93 po... Read More »

So this isn't quite a Vin Santo, it is a Vino Liquoroso. Vino Liquoroso is more like a Port, where the fermentation is blocked by the addition of alcohol to leave a percentage of sugar. The wine is a tasty mixture of Tuscan and Sicilian grapes blended to give you the flavor and feel of Vin Santo at a price point where you don't have to use an eye dropper. If you are used to dipping your biscotti into a glass of Vin Santo at an Italian Restaurant, more than likely it is a Vino Liquoroso!

There are many recent surprises in the region of Campania, which is perhaps the most improved winemaking area in Italy, but one thing has not changed: the wine made from the Aglianico grape grown around the village of Taurasi is still one of the glories of Italian viticulture. Contrade di Taurasi is owned by Sandro Lonardo, a schoolteacher, and his wife Enza. This Taurasi is cleanly made but complex, intriguing and fine. The secret to this superb wine, pride of the Valpolicella, is the special selection for the grapes placed on the wooden trays at the end of September, the meticulous control during the drying process till January/February where they are then pressed, and the loving care during the wine's aging over the next four to five years. It is vinified along the same line as the regular bottling, but gets a few additional months in cask prior to bottling. This full-bodied, velvety Brunello is endowed with plenty of dark fruit, smoke, iron and tar. Dark cherries, tobacco, herbs and minerals come together in this brooding, weighty Vigna del Sorbo. They use big Slavonian oak barrels instead of the small French oak barrels, looking more for unadulterated purity in their wines than manipulation. Marsala may be the best known wine made from Grillo, but that doesn't mean it's the only one. Marco de Bartoli uses the Sicilian varietal as the foundation for his Vecchio Samperi Ventennale, a dessert wine that is comprised of 70% Grillo and 30% Inzolia. This amber-hued dessert wine's allure starts with a nose like ambrosia - dried fruit, savory herbs, almonds and aceto - which carry over to the unctuous palate with waves of acidity.
