French Wine
When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

2006 Nenin, Pomerol $49.95
90 points Wine Spectator: "Licorice, tar and ripe berry aromas. Pretty and full-bodied, with velvety tannins, a solid core of fruit and a long finish. Beautiful. The second wine of Léoville-Barton. Best after 2011." (03/08) Here is one of the best second wines of this fabulous vintage. On par with Pagodes and Reserve de Comtesse at a fraction of the price. With 2005 Léoville-Barton selling for $120++, this wine is a super bargain. Unfortunately we only get 10 cases of this rarity. It will sell out almost instantaneously; don't delay.

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. "The 2006 Coteaux du Languedoc Pic Saint-Loup Vieilles Vignes offers a shining example of what was possible in this tricky vintage, and with around a 6,000 case production, it should be quite accessible in the marketplace. A nose of concentrated black fruits tinged with smoke and marine air, leads to a concentrated, clean, bitter fruit skin-tinged and smoky Lapsang black tea-laced palate, and a long, black-fruited, smoky, saline finish. This formidably-concentrated, lean, tight, yet seamlessly ripe red should be w... Read More »

What an intriguing wine! The Valettes are known for the extensive barrel aging of their wines, which comes through quite distinctively in the 2001 "000". This has a heady bouquet redolent of aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, with an undercurrent of lime and caramel that carry over to the palate. But what's so remarkable is that despite the secondary aromas on the nose, this wine is lively and fresh in the mouth, with hints of anise, delicate fruit and nuts awash in gorgeous bright acidity. A spectacular find.

Now with the "Aspasie label- picture coming soon! A small version of our best deal in bubbles. The freshest half bottles around, these are sent to us directly from the Ariston's! The Champagne is made of 40% chardonnay, 30% pinot noir and 30% meunier. A balanced cuvee in every way, it is clean and powerful at once. The length of this little bottle of bubbles proves to me the class of its origin, the small commune of Brouillet in Champagne. Don't settle for an imitation, buy the real thing for less! Like almost all Champagne, this wine has relativly low a... Read More »

This super rare bottling is made with some of the nearly extinct, native varietals of Champagne. It is composed of 40% Meslier, 40% Arbanne and 20% Pinot Blanc. I think it is the best of the excellent Ariston portfolio, and it was my favorite Champagne from my 2009 trip. The nose has only hints of exoticism, the over all impression is of rich cream and toast, but underneath is a hint of pine and exotic white fruit from the old varieties. On the palate the Champagne makes for a double take: it is very rich and textural, but finishes with a laser beam of c... Read More »

90 points Wine Spectator: "Delicate in style, with fine bubbles and apple, wheat beer and mineral flavors. Precise and intense, this is balanced, with a lingering aftertaste of chalk. Drink now through 2012" (11/09) K&L's notes: This very friendly and open non-vintage Champagne is composed of 70% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay and 10% Meunier. (Gary Westby, K&L)

The Aristons vineyards are vastly different than the other blanc de blancs producers that we carry. The steeper slopes, less chalk and more fossils in the soil of Brouillet make for a rich, creamy style Chardonnay Champagne that will appeal to just about anyone. This is one of my favorite toasting Champagnes, all of the flavors are up front, it is open knit and fun. It is a perfect way to start a party. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

Club Price: $29.9991 points Wine Enthusiast: "A rich Champagne, beautifully elegant, touched by yellow fruits, apples and just the right amount of weight. There are final hints of toast, spice and creamy coconut milk, giving a Champagne that is as much about wine as about bubbles." (12/09) 90 points Wine Spectator: "A round, generous style, offering peach, candied lemon and honey flavors on a creamy texture. Its mousse is refined, and this turns drier on the long finish. 95 points and one of Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2009: "This is a strongly structured and impressively textured wine. The tannins shoot through, giving a sense of dryness. But in the center, the wine shows power through both tannins and fruit, with blackberries and red plums. It has a preciscion and shape that promises long aging. Cellar Selection." (03/09) 94 points and one of Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2009: "Right at the top of its form, this 2006 is one of the finest wines to come out of the vintage. This fantastic Champagne comes from the villages of Pierry and Moussy in the sud-Epernay sub region of Champagne. Bruno Michel has been organic since 1999 and 5 of his 37.5 acres are farmed biodynamically. This vintage Brut is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, and it offers stupendous balance between simple enjoyment/drinkability and more intellectual geeked out notes of wet stone and austere minerality.

From one of K&L's favorite direct import producers! Red wines make up only 20% of the appellation of Sancerre. They are produced exclusively from Pinot Noir and in ripe years they can be positively captivating. These are never big bruisers, but elegant ladies, supple and light in color, and never short on flavor. This is one you should not miss... it is full of rich dark cherry fruit, a hint of smokiness and supple round tannins. Think of it for roasted chicken, sausages on the grill and fresh salmon. Gigondas. Even the name sounds burly, bringing to mind fairy tale giants or perhaps a French version of a lumberjack. This one, however, made by Cecile Chassagne, is a more feminine style of wine that nonetheless offers lots of rich, black fruit and a full-bodied plumy finish. 70% grenache, 15% mourvèdre and 15% Syrah. Made by the small family domaine of Paul Chapelle & Ses fils, and imported by the wine maker's brother-in-law, this shows the quality some of the less-known producers are capable of. It comes from a lieu-dit called 'Malpoitiers', near Clos la Barre, on the Volnay side of the village. On the palates it shows lots of richness and good structure. Density, acidity and minerality combine to produce a toasty Meursault with lots of focus. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Wines)
