French Wine
When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

This wine is 100% Cabernet Franc selected from multiple terroirs in the region of Saumur, in the Loire Valley. This wine has an earthy, dense nose with hints of black fruits and iron. A clean and refreshing style of Cabernet Franc, there are no weird or overwhelming notes of green pepper here! This would be fantastic with grilled and/or braised meats. It could use a little bottle age or a good 45 minutes of decanting to really show its stuff.

90 points Wine & Spirits: "This shows dense flavors of black fig, black cherry and cassis, yet its fresh acidity gives the wine a vibrant, energetic feel. It's delicious now, and should gain further harmony and complexity with time." A visit to La Noblaie is like stepping back in time. Their house dates back to the 12th century, the fermentation vat was dug around the 17th century and the crusaders spent so much time in their backyard on the way to the East that their garden is still locally known around the area as "Les Blanc Manteaux" (the White Coat... 93 points and a Cellar Selection, Wine Enthusiast: "A great wine, much more than only a Champagne, this is impressively rich and ripe, with crisp yellow fruits, spices and layers of toast. It's in an opulent style that is round but also very focused on tight layers of fruit, minerality and final vivid acidity." (12/09) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Compelling, from the first aromas of butter, vanilla, toast and coffee to the candied citrus and passion fruit jelly flavors. 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "The fabled Salon's latest release is much riper and softer than the great steely 1996 vintage. This suggests it is likely to be ready to drink soon. In the meantime, the acidity is supremely fresh, with grapefruit edges and green apple flavors. And then there is minerality and a tight, structured aftertaste as a reminder that this great Champagne is always going to be more than its fruit." This is Tarlant's top-of-the-line wine, and one of the best Champagnes we carry regardless of price. It is made of half Chardonnay and half Pinot Noir from the chalkiest portion of the Tarlant family's hillside vineyards in Oeuilly (Vallée de la Marne). The Tarlant family uses organic practices in the vineyard- but they are very coy about calling themselves organic, no doubt due to the family's prominence in the vignerons association in Champagne. The plot that the grapes come from is called "les Crayons" and the vines are all over 45 years of age, but... Read More »

This delightful Côte de Nuits-Villages displays the advantage of buying Burgundy from the less fashionable areas. It is rich, full bodied and has a long finish, with pronounced blackberry fruit notes. This is an extraordinary buy at this price. Although the wine comes from the village of Corgolin, it works with the supple and charming character of the vintage to produce a charming, rich wine for current drinking. It shows ripe fruit and lots of charm, along with a floral note. The finish has a note of black fruit and an interesting spice. This is a favo... Read More »

96-98+ points Robert Parker: "A wine for our children's children. Nobody in Bordeaux is more attentive to detail than Alfred Tesseron is at Pontet-Canet....the 2008 will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade, and it should still be in superb form circa 2060. An absolutely amazing effort, it boasts an inky/black/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of creme de cassis, graphite, charcoal, and incense, blockbuster depth, and full-bodied power. The tannins are high, but they are remarkably velvety as well as well-integrated. Sensatio... Read More »

97 points from the Wine Spectator and the #2 wine of the year! "Estate manager John Kolasa claims that nature did the lion's share of the work in 2005, leaving him and his team with a relatively simple job. Yet vast investment at the estate since the mid-1990s by the owners, who also control Chanel, enabled Rauzan to reap the benefits of a great growing season.
