Domestic Wine
When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural regions within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows and glasses to be raised around the world. We've been selling domestic wines since 1976 and all three of our stores are located in California, so it's safe to say that this territory has a special place in our heart. Take a look...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Pinot Noir Estate is more expressive aromatically. Cinnamon, allspice, rose petal, cherry, and raspberry scents lead to a silky, medium-bodied, feminine Pinot with savory red fruits, excellent concentration, lively acidity, and a lengthy finish. Drink this tasty effort through 2017." 90 points Wine Spectator: "A bit darker and denser than most, this is aromatic with spicy pear notes, hinting at tobacco and cardamom as the pear and melon flavors linger. Drink now." (10/09) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's Int... Read More »

Made entirely from organically grown Zinfandel (with a dash of organically grown Petite Sirah) from some super old vines. Rich and fruity in the Amador style that we love, this wine swirls jammy blackberry and cherry fruit with Hershey Kiss chocolate and vanilla notes. The finish is sweet and velvety, making this a good match for grilled meats or roasts.

91 points Robert Parker: "The non-vintage Pleiades XVII is a kitchen sink blend of Carignane, Barbera, Mourvedre, Syrah, Sangiovese, and a touch of Viognier. To quote him, -It is designed to offend the wine police.- Dark ruby-colored, with a vibrant nose of sweet black cherries, incense, spice box, a bit of pepper and earth, the wine is round, generous, savory, and all that a delicious, seductive, bistro/brasserie red wine should be. It cuts a relatively full, fleshy mouthfeel, but it is vibrant and super-pure, with outstanding ripeness and freshness. Dr... Read More »

Seghesio's Rockpile Zin is a double-whammy - it showcases the concentrated fruit that comes from the steep, rocky Rockpile appellation while also waving the flag of a stellar vintage, one winemaker Ted Seghesio calls the best to date. Deep raspberry and black currant aromas are highlighted by scents of clove and spicy black pepper on the nose and mirrored on the wine's palate. And though it's remarkably concentrated, Rockpile's elevation and soil adds minerality and bright acidity that make this a wonderfully balanced and complex Zin. Try with hanger ste... Read More »

The Taz Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir is a best-of-both-worlds wine. It takes two distinct expressions of Santa Barbara County and blends them into a balanced wine with plenty of nuance. The first component of the blend comes from Taz's North Canyon Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. This vineyard lies at the northern edge of Santa Barbara, butting up to the San Luis Obispo County line. The Pinot Noir from North Canyon is soft and silky with delicate floral notes and red fruit character. These elegant lots are complemented by grapes from Fiddlestix Vi... Read More »

All this is wrapped into extraordinarily sweet, refined tannins. Addictively drinkable, but not a long ager. Best now and through 2012."-WE 3/01/09. 92 points Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "Heavily extracted aromas of black cherries, dark soils, hints of licorice and scads of rich oak announce this wine's serious intentions, and it continues in the mouth with de... 90 points from Robert Parker: "One of the finest values in the Central Coast is their Cuvee Le Bec, and the 2007, a blend of 44% Grenache, 28% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre, and 8% Counoise, is one of the two great Cotes du Rhone look-alikes of the Central Coast (the other being the 2007 Cotes de Tablas). This is the type of wine that California can do so well, but rarely does. Part of the reason may be due to the difficulty of trying to convince consumers that a proprietary blend, available at a much lower price, can ultimately be better than some single varieta... It's mouthwatering and firmly structured, with umami flavors of oyster mushrooms and marrow to balance out the fruit. A portion of the blend is Sauvignon Musque (13 percent) and a portion is fermented and aged in French oak barrels (21). The result is delcious with roast fish." California's Russian River Valley has long-since earned its reputation as the source of incredible Pinot Noir, and Bogle as the source for tasty, value-driven wines. A splashy Brut to celebrate J's 20th anniversary, the J Cuvée 20 is an assemblage from the winery's best cool-climate vineyard sites in the Russian River Valley. Lemon zest, honeysuckle and fainty yeasty aromas dominate the nose, with crisp apple and tart grapefruit underpinnings on the palate. Light toast, caramel and almond flavors round out the mid-palate.
