96-98+ points Robert Parker: "A wine for our children's children. Nobody in Bordeaux is more attentive to detail than Alfred Tesseron is at Pontet-Canet....the 2008 will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade, and it should still be in superb form circa 2060. An absolutely amazing effort, it boasts an inky/black/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of creme de cassis, graphite, charcoal, and incense, blockbuster depth, and full-bodied power. The tannins are high, but they are remarkably velvety as well as well-integrated. Sensatio... Read More »

95 points Wine Spectator: "A mature Champagne from a great vintage. This is lean, yet mellows nicely to a toasty bubbly flavored with lemon and candied ginger. It still has its racy structure and is beginning to take on a smoky note. The long finish evokes roasted hazelnut, smoke and mineral. Drink now through 2023." (11/08) Our Notes: This wine was first released in 1997, but a portion was held back and recently disgorged. It is composed of 1/3 Chardonnay and 2/3 a combination of Pinot Noir and Meunier. From a vintage that is fast becoming my pick for... Read More »

This super rare bottling is made with some of the nearly extinct, native varietals of Champagne. It is composed of 40% Meslier, 40% Arbanne and 20% Pinot Blanc. I think it is the best of the excellent Ariston portfolio, and it was my favorite Champagne from my 2009 trip. The nose has only hints of exoticism, the over all impression is of rich cream and toast, but underneath is a hint of pine and exotic white fruit from the old varieties. On the palate the Champagne makes for a double take: it is very rich and textural, but finishes with a laser beam of c... Read More »

94 points Wine Spectator: "This shows a noticeably burly edge, particularly for the vintage, with espresso, roasted chestnut, loam, bittersweet cocoa and licorice root notes wrapped around a core of black currant and braised fig fruit. The dark, muscular finish has lots in reserve. Best from 2010 through 2027." (10/09) 92-94 points Robert Parker: "The single vineyard cuvee, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet (approximately 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre) is a wine of great purity and elegance exhibiting notes of blue and black fruits, truffles, ... 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "...a wine that is all opulence and roundness. The tannins are certainly there, but they come through as big, bold richness. The power suggests it will age well, but for drinking earlier, the freshness of the sweet homemade plum jam promises well." (03/09) 94 points Robert Parker: "The exceptional 2006 Cos d’Estournel is composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, 55% of the production was utilized. A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% old vine Cinsault, half is aged in cement tanks, and the rest in 2- to 3-year-old 600-liter demi-muids. This inky/blue/purple-tinged 2007 offers up aromas of graphite, camphor, incense, blueberries, and black fruits. Full-bodied, young and unevolved, with massive depth, great concentration, and super purity, texture, and length, it requires 2-4 years of cellaring, and should easily age f... Read More »

93 points Robert Parker: "A distinctive bouquet of violets, soy, pepper, blackberries, cassis, and tree bark gives this 2001 a singular style. This dense ruby/purple-colored blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and a whopping 14% Petit Verdot exhibits plenty of structure, wonderful sweetness, a closed style, but a rich, textured, persistent character. The unusually large percentage of Petit Verdot gives the wine more structure and less initial charm. This beauty needs some time in the cellar. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018." 96-98 points Robert Parker: "In Bruno Borie’s words, the 2008 Ducru Beaucaillou is 'well above 2004, with much more structure than 2007, and more sensuality than 2006.' I would add that it is even better than that, and as profound as the 2005. Approximately 33% of the crop made it into Ducru, which came in at 13.1% natural alcohol. This 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot blend reveals a dense opaque purple color as well as a gorgeously sweet bouquet of spring flowers, creme de cassis, blackberry liqueur, licorice, espresso roast, and spice. 94 points from Parker: "A dense, traditionally crafted wine for those with patience, the 2000 Calon-Segur rivals the estate's finest wines of the last two decades, the 1995, 1988, and 1982. But be forewarned, this wine has already closed down, something totally in character with all top vintages from this estate. Powerful and balanced, with a lingering aftertaste." 94 points from Allen Meadows: "The '06 is more obviously riper than the '07 with a complex, ripe and elegant mix of green apple, spice and minerality that complements perfectly the round, rich, detailed and stony flavors that possess ample mid-palate fat and superb dep... (May/June 01) 90 points Robert Parker: "The dense plum/purple-colored 1999 offers up aromas of truffles, underbrush, espresso, black cherries, and roasted meats. This is spectacular rose- perhaps the best non vintage rose that I have ever had, and a great argument for the blenders art. It is composed of 14% Meunier, 24% Chardonnay and 62% Pinot Noir. It is part of that Pinot, that makes up 5% of the blend in total that makes the wine so special- vinified as red wine and barrel aged, it comes from Bollingers old estate vineyards in Ay and Verzenay. Full-bodied, extraordinarily textured, and multidimensional with an amazingly long finish of nearly 60 seconds, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot from a 75-acre vineyard is a compelling wine that is one of the stars of the vintage. This Champagne started in 1875, thanks to Emile Marguet, who since 1883 has tended his best vineyards of the Cote des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, in preparation for the arrival of phylloxera. Today, this domaine's top bubbly is the Cuvee Maxime, made only in years that merit it!

Shows a lot of mineral and oriental spice in the nose, and those scents really opened up after a few minutes in the glass. The terroir shines through. When asked to compare it to wines from previous vintages, Mr. Prats mentioned it reminds him of the 1985 though not quite as fat. Superb length. The wine shows its Cabernet tannins, but they’re well integrated. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot in the vineyard, and in the blend. 55% new oak. Arguably Dagueneau's most popular cuvee, this wine is produced primarily from a vineyard north of Saint Andelain called La Folie. The soil here is deeper clay with some chalky limestone. There is virtually no silex in the soil. The vineyard is gently sloped and has perfect south/southeast exposure. Some smaller plots on the Saint Andelain hill occasionally make it into this cuvee. Barrel fermented and aged mostly in 450 and 600 liter barrels, some of Dagueneau's famous cigar barrels are used as well. This barrel, designed by Didier, is 350 liters a... Read More »

Bonville is sold out of this vintage in 750's, so I guess we will have to drink it from magnum! The 2002 vintage is fantastic for the Cotes de Blancs wines, with much in common with the great 1990 harvest. The Bonville family owns 50 acres of Grand Cru vineyards and uses exclusively estate fruit in this wine. This is 100% Chardonnay from the walled Clos of Cazals in Oger. In the past, fruit from this vineyard was joined with that of Mesnil sur Oger for a stupendously good Champagne. Then it occurred to Cazal that its very own Clos might make wonderful and wonderfully original bubbly! Brilliant, luminous, with notes of citronella, hawthorn, rose and violet with apple, pear and citrus on the palate. The bubbles on this one are as fine as fine can be, and the finish brings in subtle cedar and oak. A distinctive style, but one that will find wide appeal!

While the renowned 1996 vintage Brut from Fleury has taken much of the acclaim, the 1995 is not to be overlooked. Champagne always tastes better out of magnum. This is pure vintage 1998, but it is not labeled as such.
