The 2004 François Diligent Cuvée Tradition Brut Champagne is all chardonnay, a rarity in the southern part of Champagne, where the pinot noir grape is king. The grapes are grown both in Buxeuil and in Polisy, a village just to the northwest. The vineyard sites are rich in kimméridgien clay. That’s the same soil as in Chablis, which is less than 40 miles southeast of here. Not surprisingly, the chardonnay here has a very Chablissiene character to it, with more rich warmth than one expects from a Mesnil or Avize Blanc de Blancs.

This gem of a blanc de blanc is in fact a single vineyard wine, from the "les brousses" parcel in the premier cru village of Pierry, immediately to the south of Epernay. The vineyard is a massal selection (not made from cloned vines) that was planted in 1964. It is composed of the 2005 and 2004 vintages and given full barrel fermentation in old oak. Made mostly from Grands and 1er Cru wines, this comprises the best first pressings, benefiting from vinification without malolactic fermentation and aging in oak casks for close to a year. Four years of blending then three years of aging in the cellar make this blend exceptional. A perfect balance of finesse, fruitiness and personality. 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Meunier.

This Champagne started in 1875, thanks to Emile Marguet, who since 1883 has tended his best vineyards of the Cote des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, in preparation for the arrival of phylloxera. Today, this domaine's top bubbly is the Cuvee Maxime, made only in years that merit it!
