1988 Veuve Clicquot Rare Vintage (Recently disgorged) Champagne
1988 Veuve Clicquot Rare Vintage (Recently disgorged) Champagne

95 points Wine Spectator: "A mature Champagne from a great vintage. This is lean, yet mellows nicely to a toasty bubbly flavored with lemon and candied ginger. It still has its racy structure and is beginning to take on a smoky note. The long finish evokes roasted hazelnut, smoke and mineral. Drink now through 2023." (11/08) Our Notes: This wine was first released in 1997, but a portion was held back and recently disgorged. It is composed of 1/3 Chardonnay and 2/3 a combination of Pinot Noir and Meunier. From a vintage that is fast becoming my pick for... Read More »

1988 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
1988 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac

91 points Wine Spectator: "A bit less approachable at this stage than usual. Firm and focused, with a pleasant minty edge to the solid currant and cedar aromas and flavors, hinting at tobacco and toast on the long finish. Thick in texture without being heavy..." (04/91) 90 points Robert Parker: "One of the stars of the vintage, the 1988 has evolved beautifully. Dark ruby, with a full-intensity bouquet of black plums, herbs, and currants, a silky smooth texture, and full body, it is one of the most highly extracted wines of the vintage. Seductively preco... 1988 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru "Lavieres" (was $60.)

According to the Wine Spectator: "Ripe and plummy, with pretty floral aromas, tight, compact cherry and currant flavors and firm tannins that keep them in check. The flavors need time to mellow and expand..." (02/91) According to Robert Parker: "The Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Lavieres is excellent, with deep, medium-bodied, tannic yet concentrated flavors. It should possess excellent aging potential. It has fine color, is built for the long haul, and should last 12-15 years." (01/90)

Have we lost our minds? Grand Cru red Burgundy, fully mature and ready to drink tonight for less than $80? It's true. The downturn in the economy is bad for some, good for others! Earthy, rustic, evolved and pure, this is an experience to revel in, especially when served with aged cheeses.

1988 Mussy Beaune 1er Cru "Epenottes" (was $60.)

An old-fashioned producer, and an old fashioned wine, for the old fashioned Burgundy lover who laments the current trend toward flashy, ripe and fruity wines. This is certainly not flashy! Rather, it is an example of classic 1er Cru Pinot Noir, meant for equally funky and earthy cheeses!

1988 Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée
1988 Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée

According to Clive Coates: "[the Vosne Romanee] benefits from the economies of scale; for the produce of the young vines - a part of the parcel had to be replanted after the 1985 frost - can be vinified separately and set aside. It is a splendid village example, full and sturdy, but succulent, rich and ample, with a good base of oak."

1988 Chandon de Briailles Corton Grand Cru "Clos du Roi"
1988 Chandon de Briailles Corton Grand Cru "Clos du Roi"

91 points Robert Parker: 'The Corton-Clos du Roi, of which there are only 150 cases, is truly superb, displaying a profound bouquet of minerals, black fruits, and spicy oak intertwined with the subtle scent of herbs. In the mouth, it is extremely deep, rich, and powerful, with a stunning finish. Given its relatively aggressive tannins, I would wait at least 2-3 years before drinking this excellent wine." 1988 Ruchottes Chambertin, Grand Cru, Christophe Roumier

93 points Allen Meadows: " A really lovely nose that is still fresh while being fully mature and reflects moderate sous bois, spice, earth and the truffle-character that fine old Ruchottes often reflects and this aspect is also picked up on the delicious, vibrant and intense middle weight flavors that offer fine punch on the mouth coating and admirably long finish. This is a terrific '88 that does not reflect the hard edge that many do. Drink now and over the next 20 years, perhaps longer." (Tasted: Mar 08, 2008)

1988 Pierre Bourée Gevrey-Chambertin "Clos de la Justice"
1988 Pierre Bourée Gevrey-Chambertin "Clos de la Justice"

90 points Robert Parker: "The Premier Cru Clos St.-Jacques is deliciously fruity, soft, much more supple, and less ageworthy than the Gevrey-Chambertin-Clos de la Justice. While I am rarely ever enthralled by Bouree Pere et Fils' white wines, the red wines are of extremely high quality, particularly in the top vintages. They are very traditional burgundies that are vatted for over three weeks, kept in old oak barrels, and bottled unfiltered. In fact, the Bouree Pere et Fils may be the last firm in the Cote d'Or to bottle their burgundies in a top vintage... Read More »

89 points Robert Parker: "If you have the patience to wait 2 or 3 years, the Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras, from the superb Premier Cru vineyard next to the Grand Cru Bonnes Mares, is intense, full bodied, and deep, with gorgeous levels of fruit. However, it needs time to shed its tannins. Of the 1988s, it is by far Barthod's most powerful wine." (01/90)

1988 Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine Pommard "Epenots"
1988 Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine Pommard "Epenots"

According to Robert Parker: "Dubreuil has always made fashionable, elegant, light-colored wines known for their finesse..." (12/92) At Dubreuil-Fontaine, 20 ha of vines produce no less than 20 different appellations. In 1879, Pierre Arbinet established the Domaine which then passed to his son in law Julien Dubreuil; Julien's son Pierre Dubreuil-Fontaine expanded the vineyards. From a successful vintage in Burgundy, this mature Pommard is dense and beefy, even at 20 years of age. Impressive and lovely to drink now.

A deep, rich and earthy mix of some primary but now mostly secondary fruit that leads to big, dense and intense flavors blessed with plenty of complexity all the while displaying solid balance as the tannins are relatively integrated on the long finish. 1988 Domaine Maurice Ecard Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru "Narbantons"

According to Robert Parker: "The Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Narbantons is a structured wine. While it is no better than Les Jarrons or Les Serpentieres, it is less precocious, more charming, and requires more aging. It has more body and slightly more acidity. I would age it in the bottle for about a year, and then drink it over the next 4 or 5. Ecard is one of the top producers in Savigny-Les-Beaune. He seems to consistently produce wines of great elegance and delicious fruit..." (01/90)
