2008 Bernier Chardonnay Vins du Pays Jardin de la France Top Pick!
2008 Bernier Chardonnay Vins du Pays Jardin de la France

There are many great bottles of Chardonnay and this is no exception, yet not many leave you with such satisfaction while not draining your wallet. It does not pretend to challenge the established icons of the wine world; it is merely delicious, friendly and under 7 bucks, a perfect bottle for Tuesday night, something to reach for to quench your thirst and that of your friends. The wine is produced by the three brothers Couillaud at the Château de la Ragotière a few minutes from the Atlantic near the mouth of the Loire River where the Maritime climate is... Read More »

2007 Domaine des Niales, Rhedon-Marin Mâcon-Villages Vieilles Vignes
2007 Domaine des Niales, Rhedon-Marin Mâcon-Villages Vieilles Vignes

This charming Chardonnay from the Macon comes from a small grower. Lionel Rhedon-Marin is a recent graduate of the College of Viticulture in the nearby village of Davaye, where Guffens trained. All of their young-vine fruit is sold in bulk to one of the better negociants, who is pleased to have it, since Lionel is such a careful grower. But their old-vine fruit, all over 45 years of age, is kept for the Domaine wine, which is charming and elegant. On the palate this is focused and bright, with a nice spicy note and lovely acidity, as well as some pret... Read More »

2007 Domaine l'Églantière Chablis

The wines from Jean Durup appear under several different labels, but are the same lovely, focused and mineral-driven Chablis. Fantastic Chardonnay in a totally different style than you will find from much of CA and Australia, and at a price that is quite appealing from this part of the world. Allen Meadows writes: "A slightly riper nose that also offers up green fruit but with oyster shell, iodine and a saline note that merges into rich, round and generous flavors that are delicious and forward yet there is firm supporting acidity. This too is lovely fo... Read More »

Chardonnay, Plaisir des Princes Top Pick!
Chardonnay, Plaisir des Princes

In a plentiful vintage, some vineyards in Burgundy produce more wine than they can legally sell. When they do, they declassify the overage as Vin de Table. This white Burgundy from the Mâcon falls into that category. It is actually 2008 Mâcon Villages, but the crop was large and the market softer, thanks to the weak dollar. Remember, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck but sells for peanuts, who cares what they call it? (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)

1998 Dejoria Platinum Brut Champagne ($90+ elsewhere) Top Pick!
1998 Dejoria Platinum Brut Champagne ($90+ elsewhere)

We tasted this Champagne and liked it when it was expensive, but didn't feel that it offered great value at that high price. After months of going back and forth, we ended up with a better deal than we thought possible and bought everything the distributor had. This is a wine cut from the Ace of Spades cloth (which we sell for $269), both in production (the Ace is also a brand made by a separate producer) and in flavor. It is made entirely from the first press juice of a strict selection of Beaumont des Crayeres 212 acres of vines. It is very well balanc... Read More »

Franck Bonville Brut Selection Blanc de Blancs Champagne

This is another terrific bargain, purchased directly from France. All of the fruit comes from the Bonville's own estate vineyards in the marvelous Grand Cru of Avize. It is all Chardonnay blended from three very good years: '00, '01 and '02. This Champagne has exotic, ripe fruit aromatics and as the glass warms up there are also traces of clean clay and earth, just like in great Chablis! On the palate the Champagne has great fruit and a wonderful full texture. This is a perennial staff favorite, with cases and cases being sold to our own sales team. (Gar... Read More »

2007 Domaine des Nembrets Denis Barraud Pouilly-Fuissé "Les Chataigniers",

One of our favorite producers is Denis Barraud, who runs the Domaine des Nembrets. This cuvée comes from his estate vineyards on the slopes of the Roche de Vergisson, a giant basalt monolith, surrounded by complex and folded rocky, well-drained soils with limestone outcroppings. It is bright and fresh, generous and open, but shows a continuous thread of mineral and spice, with an attractive rich and lovely lemon-cream note. The hint of toasty oak and leesiness make it open and generous, and complement the focus of the wine. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgu... Read More »

What an intriguing wine! The Valettes are known for the extensive barrel aging of their wines, which comes through quite distinctively in the 2001 "000". This has a heady bouquet redolent of aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, with an undercurrent of lime and caramel that carry over to the palate. But what's so remarkable is that despite the secondary aromas on the nose, this wine is lively and fresh in the mouth, with hints of anise, delicate fruit and nuts awash in gorgeous bright acidity. Ariston Aspasie Cepages d'Antan Champagne

This super rare bottling is made with some of the nearly extinct, native varietals of Champagne. It is composed of 40% Meslier, 40% Arbanne and 20% Pinot Blanc. I think it is the best of the excellent Ariston portfolio, and it was my favorite Champagne from my 2009 trip. The nose has only hints of exoticism, the over all impression is of rich cream and toast, but underneath is a hint of pine and exotic white fruit from the old varieties. 93 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Longtime readers know that the Valettes are committed to the long-term barrel aging of their top wines, so they won't be surprised to learn that the 2001 Pouilly-Fuisse Clos Reyssie Reserve Particuliere was bottled in December, 2005 after 48 months in barrel. Its nuanced nose reveals fresh minerals, hints of butterscotch, notes of citrus juices, as well as a traces of rancio, the French term for the aromas of an aged wine. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and satin-textured, this fascinating wine offers ... Read More »

2006 Domaine Louis Moreau Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos"
2006 Domaine Louis Moreau Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos"

Shows a bit of vanilla from the oak, but the minerality and focus propel it forward. When tasted in June of 2008, it was still very closed and youthful, needing more time in bottle to integrate, so we delayed importing it until 2009. This represents a terrific value in Grand Cru Chablis, thanks to our direct relationship with the domaine. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)

2007 Larochette-Manciat Mâcon-Morizottes
2007 Larochette-Manciat Mâcon-Morizottes

This family domaine produces some of the finest 'Grands vins de Terroir' in Chaintre (pop. 250) since five generations. Marie-Pierre and Olivier Larochette took over the family estate in 1992 and finished their new cellar in 1999. The manual harvest on the 7 hectares of the domain, traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques in Oak barrels, the elevage on 'lies' followed by 'batonnage' and the latest harvest possible brings a rare, complex, powerful and elegant Macon. This is how Chardonnay should taste. The wine is delicate in the best sense of the wor... Read More »

2005 Domaine Benoit Ente Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ Gain" (Was $86 Elsewhere)

Benoit Ente's parcel in Champ Gains is next to Truffieres in Argillo-Calcaire soil, in contrast to the stonier soil further up the hill. It has a beautiful nose, with notes of white flowers. This was a vintage that it was good to be down in the lower part of Champ Gain, since the upper part had blocked maturity and resulting lower acids. This retains excellent acidity and a sense of freshness. It is finer and more focused than the village wine, and not at all aggressive. A clean Chardonnay, with no oak at all. Just lovely, softer fruit notes and a refreshing, open palate. Perfect for summer sipping, or anytime you want to get away from high-alcohol, woody Chardonnay.

2007 Domaine Sylvain Langoureau Meursault Blagny 1er Cru "La Piece Sous le Bois"
2007 Domaine Sylvain Langoureau Meursault Blagny 1er Cru "La Piece Sous le Bois"

This comes from a plot high on the hill, just below the woods, above Meursault Perrieres, near the border with Puligny Montrachet. It is bright, has lots of minerality, and lovely white flowers on the nose. Fine, elegant and long on the palate, this is a lovely Premier Cru for the price of a village wine! It is a direct buy, so when it sells out, we won't have more until the next vintage, so do not wait. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)

2007 Domaine Roulot Meursault "Vireuils"
2007 Domaine Roulot Meursault "Vireuils"

According to Allen Meadows: "As one would expect, this is more elegant as well as more complex with a layered and equally fresh nose offering up notes of white peach and acacia blossom with stone hints that also suffuse the pure, detailed and round flavors that are perhaps more generous than usual as they coat the palate with sap on the solidly long finish. This is quite forward and should drink well early on." (Tasted: Jun 01, 2009) According to Stephen Tanzer: "Slightly reduced aromas of soft citrus fruits and toasted bread. Ripe, round and nicely bal... Read More »

2007 Domaine Lavantureux Petite Chablis (375ml)
2007 Domaine Lavantureux Petite Chablis (375ml)

Roland (a drinking buddy of Bernard Raveneau) makes one amazing Petite Chablis. When you ask Roland what the difference is between Chablis and Petit Chablis, he says, "About 2 bucks a bottle". The appellation line between Chablis and Petit Chablis runs right through the center of his vineyard land. This is just a lesson on how to make a righteous bottle of fermented grape juice. Piercing minerality with oodles of briny oyster and bright green things. In fact, I had a glass with 6 Malpeque oysters last week and was so smitten I ordered another 6 oyst... Read More »
