This white Burgundy from the Mâcon falls into that category. It is actually 2008 Mâcon Villages, but the crop was large and the market softer, thanks to the weak dollar. This Chardonnay, harvested by hand come from a vineyard situated on gravel soils and was aged in oak barrels for one year. It is a fleshy, robust, fine white, but also very fresh and bright. Do not hesitate to keep some on hand for drinking now and over the next 2 or 3 years. The fruit comes from Meursault and Puligny, but too far down the hill to legally get the appellation. It also contains some declassified village Meursault in the blend.

What an intriguing wine! The Valettes are known for the extensive barrel aging of their wines, which comes through quite distinctively in the 2001 "000". This has a heady bouquet redolent of aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, with an undercurrent of lime and caramel that carry over to the palate. But what's so remarkable is that despite the secondary aromas on the nose, this wine is lively and fresh in the mouth, with hints of anise, delicate fruit and nuts awash in gorgeous bright acidity. A spectacular find.

Made by the small family domaine of Paul Chapelle & Ses fils, and imported by the wine maker's brother-in-law, this shows the quality some of the less-known producers are capable of. It comes from a lieu-dit called 'Malpoitiers', near Clos la Barre, on the Volnay side of the village. On the palates it shows lots of richness and good structure. One of the rising stars of the Languedoc, Jean Louis Denois makes exciting, world class wines that nonetheless remain amazingly inexpensive. His vineyards sit in the very southwestern corner of France, at the foot of the Pyrenees, and include red, white and sparkling wines. All of the Denois wines are made from perilously low-yielding vines, and vinified with as little interference as possible.
