2006 Nicolas Potel Santenay 1er Cru " Les Gravières" Top Pick!
2006 Nicolas Potel Santenay 1er Cru " Les Gravières"

Bright and cheerful, with very pretty red fruit notes, this is simply charming. Located near the border with Chassagne Montrachet, in the best area of Santenay, this is rather Volnay-like, with fine elegant structure, pretty red and black fruit notes, and a lovely open character. This is, quite simply, charming Pinot Noir with a profound sense of place. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 02/09)

2006 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc

Everything is beautifully pure as well as perfectly balanced in this outstanding effort. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. Excellent value.." 2006 Maison Nicolas Potel Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru "Les Marconnets"

Bright and earthy, with a long and elegant finish. Marconnets is on the border with Beaune, on the slope above Narbantons. This has a full mid-palate, with lots of fine tannins, and an elegant structure. It was vinified with partial stems, and will age beautifully, or be lovely now with an hour in the decanter. Dark berry fruit notes balance the earthy and structured nature of the wine. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 07/09)

90 points Wine Spectator: "There's lovely fruit in this wine, with berry, chocolate and plum aromas and flavors. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. A very balanced Kirwan. Best from 2011 through 2016." (03/09) K&L's notes - 65% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot. Quite dark with sweet palate entry. Some meaty notes. Flashy style. * Ralph Sands: Super sweet fruit upfront. Balanced and firm on the finish. And on 01/23/09: tobacco and coffee aromas, toasty wine. Great palate impression. Lovely and best of all, in stock!

2006 Chateau Ducla Experience XIV Blanc, Bordeaux
2006 Chateau Ducla Experience XIV Blanc, Bordeaux

One of Ralph's favorites. 46% sauvignon blanc, 46% sauvignon gris and 8% muscadelle. Barrel-fermented and sur lies aged for 7-9 months. Here is a wine with the delicacy expected in white Bordeaux, but with good power and depth. The unusual addition of sauvignon gris adds to the aromatic intensity with notes of jasmine, mango and passion fruit. Toasty vanilla comes through nicely and adds to the long and delicate finish.

2006 Domaine René Leclerc Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru ($83 elsewhere)

90-92 points Allen Meadows' Burghound: "Very mild reduction can't begin to suppress the elegant, airy and refined extract of red pinot fruit nose that merges seamlessly into rich and relatively full flavors that possess a supple mid-palate that firms up moderately on the sappy and mouth coating finish. This is pretty rather than truly profound though if it can add a bit more depth with time in bottle, that may change. For the moment however, this appears to possess very good to excellent potential." I didn't find the reductive notes that Burghound notic... Read More »

"The 2006 Coteaux du Languedoc Pic Saint-Loup Vieilles Vignes offers a shining example of what was possible in this tricky vintage, and with around a 6,000 case production, it should be quite accessible in the marketplace. 2006 Maison Faiveley Bourgogne Rouge "Cuvée Joseph Faiveley"
2006 Maison Faiveley Bourgogne Rouge "Cuvée Joseph Faiveley"

Bourgogne 'Joseph Faiveley' Pinot Noir is named in honor of current proprietor François Faiveley's great, great grandfather. Born in 1823, Joseph took over and greatly expanded the domaine which his father, Pierre, had founded in 1825. This represents a spectacular value in entry level red Burgundy, and is ready to drink now.

2006 Domaine des Deux Bernards Beaune 1er Cru "Champs Pimont" (Louis Dufouleur)
2006 Domaine des Deux Bernards Beaune 1er Cru "Champs Pimont" (Louis Dufouleur)

Very pretty red fruit notes are accompanied by a relatively soft palate impression, particularly for this terroir. Nice character, a memorable finish, and price that won't break the bank. What's not to like?

2006 Domaine Chicotot Nuits-St-Georges (Was $40)
2006 Domaine Chicotot Nuits-St-Georges (Was $40)

Sweeter and more supple than the Bourgogne, with round fruit, followed by some tannins at the finish. Nice black fruit notes. According to Robert Parker: "His wines are powerful, densely-colored, full-bodied examples of Nuits St.-Georges that might even be better if he bottled them sooner. Nevertheless, readers in search of intense, muscular, powerful, blockbuster red Burgundies should note that Chicotot delivers the goods." (08/95)

2006 Lagrange, St-Julien
2006 Lagrange, St-Julien

91 points Robert Parker: "A very strong effort from Lagrange in 2006, this estate's tendency for including a nearly overwhelming oak component in its wines has been tamed in this cuvee, resulting in a better-balanced, potentially complex offering. A deep opaque purple color is followed by aromas of espresso roast, subtle pain grille, black currants, and cigar box. Full-bodied and surprisingly powerful for a 2006, with outstanding purity, texture, and depth, patience will be required for this beauty. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2027." (02/09) 90 points Wi... 2006 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Was $69.99) Back In Stock!
2006 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Was $69.99)

93 points Wine Spectator: " very grippy style, with lots of sweet tapenade, tobacco, hot stone and braised chestnut notes weaving through a core of dark currant and fig fruit. There's a nice twinge of lavender on the structured finish. For the cellar. Best from 2010 through 2028." (11/08) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jan/Feb 09: Vivid red. Impressively complex bouquet of raspberry, dried cherry, garrigue and flowers. Exotic apricot and floral honey notes come up with air and carry onto the palate, which shows sweet red fruit fla... 2006 Domaine Belle "Cuvée Louis Belle" Crozes-Hermitage (was $40.)
2006 Domaine Belle "Cuvée Louis Belle" Crozes-Hermitage (was $40.)

According to Robert Parker: "Displaying more tannin and substance, the 2006 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvee Louis Belle possesses aromas of roasted meats, lavender, garrigue, and black currants. It is a classic, elegant, but substantial Crozes to enjoy over the next decade. Intelligently made, fresh, lively, concentrated wines emerge from the Domaine Belle, a modestly-sized Crozes-Hermitage estate that remains under the radar of most consumers." (04/09) This impeccably run family estate is located in the village of Larnage, about 2 miles north of the 300-acre vin... Read More »

2006 l'Arrosee, St-Emilion (was $50.)
2006 l'Arrosee, St-Emilion (was $50.)

According to Robert Parker: "this 2006 reveals notions of crushed rocks, and sweet kirsch and raspberry notes in a medium to full-bodied, elegant style. Its elevated tannins suggest that this wine may not turn out as well as I had hoped. Good purity and potential complexity are there, but the tannins are worrisome. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020?" (02/09) K&L's notes on 01/23/09: exotic Asian spices, very perfumey wine. Clyde loves this!

2006 Marjosse, Bordeaux (was $15.99)

This comes from a relatively new, outstanding property under the leadership of Pierre Lurton (Cheval Blanc director). 55% Merlot, 35% Cab Sauvignon, 10% Cab franc, malbec and petit verdot. Lots of black fruits on the palate. Very ripe and rich wine that can be cellared for several years. Lingering finish.

2006 Ferrand Lartigue, St-Emilion
2006 Ferrand Lartigue, St-Emilion

According to Robert Parker: "...It exhibits an attractive purity to its sweet red cherry and strawberry fruit, medium body, and a distinct underlying earthiness. Drink this spicy 2006 over the next 5-7 years." (02/09) According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/Jun 07: "Red-ruby. Redcurrant, cherry, leather and minerals on the aromatic nose. A supple, sweet midweight with moderate intensity and depth and nicely integrated acidity. Not as rich as the 2005 but conveys an impression of chocolatey ripeness and seamless texture. Nicely balan... Read More »

2006 Maison Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes (Was $60 Elsewhere)
2006 Maison Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes (Was $60 Elsewhere)

According to the Wine Spectator: "Elegant and firm, with red berry and red cherry flavors accented by violet. Nicely balanced, this should come together in two to three years. Best from 2010 through 2015. 90 cases imported." (11/08) At our recent staff tasting, this had opened quite nicely, with rich and sappy Vosne Romanée fruit on the mid-palate. Lovely, impressive and well-priced. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 10/09)
