Picpoul de Pinet is considered the "Muscadet" of the south. Grown just meters from the oyster beds of the Bassin de Thau, the wine marries perfectly with fish and shellfish. Picpoul (also known as Folle Blanche or Gros Plant) means "lip stinger," which refers to the high acidity of its must. Great with oysters and seafood. In a plentiful vintage, some vineyards in Burgundy produce more wine than they can legally sell. When they do, they declassify the overage as Vin de Table. This white Burgundy from the Mâcon falls into that category. It is actually 2008 Mâcon Villages, but the crop was large and the market softer, thanks to the weak dollar. The 2008 Domaine Begude Le Bel Ange is composed of 85% Chardonnay and 15% Chenin Blanc from predominantly clay and limestone soils on south-east facing vineyards. Yields are approximately 45hl/hectare. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, with no oak influence, and under cool temperatures in order to allow the purity of fruit shine through. Situated near St Estephe, these vineyards are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 5% Cab Franc. Verdignan, the estate, is notable by the beautiful architecture of its castle. Photo enthusiasts who stop here find many similarities with other architectural constructions médocain of the 18th century. On the stone lintel of the door's oldest vat of Verdignan there is ingraved a date: 1720! This 2004 is balanced with silky tannins that are complimented by great acidity and red berry fruit. Perfect with a prime rib or rack of lamb.
