95 points Wine Enthusiast: "A very fine Cabernet that combines the modern cult style ripeness with old-fashioned structure to produce a wine of exceptional appeal. It's rich in mountain-intense black currants, bitter chocolate, spices and smoky oak, wrapped into splendid tannins, and the finish is throroughly dry. The grapes are from the Sonoma side of Spring Mountain, and the winemaker was veteran Marco DiGiulio." (11/09) According to the Wine Spectator: "Smoky, toasty roasted herb and berry flavors are rich and full-bodied, showing plenty of oak and e... Read More »

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Most of the grapes came from the Annapolis Vineyard, with some from Seascape. While the vintage was cool, it gave incredibly long hangtime. Dry, crisp and delicate, the wine has a silky voluptuousness that makes it irresistible, with pie-filling cherry and black raspberry flavors finished with Asian spice. New French oak adds toast and vanilla sweetness. It's expensive, but still a bargain." (5/1/2007) 90 points and one star from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "A substantial Pinot from first sniff to aftertaste, t... Read More »

92 points and a "Cellar Selection" from Wine Enthusiast: "At the age of nearly four years, this mountain Cab remains vigorous in tannins, suggesting 4-6 additional years of aging. If you drink it now, decant. It's a very good wine, rich in blackberries, black currants, herbs and cedar, with a very long, distinguished finish." (8/1/2009) 90 points from Robert Parker: "Primarily from estate vineyards, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits notes of ripe raspberries, blueberries, and kirsch interwoven with spicy oak, subtle wood, and earthy undertones. Since all the way back to 1972 Silver Oak has been bottling Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley. In fact they were one of the first to champion the now well know region of Alexander Valley by putting it on their label. While their Napa Valley bottling has garnered more attention, and possibly press over the years, we think the Alexander Valley bottling is still one of the best Cabs out there for the money. At about half the price of the Napa bottling, and with many other Alexander Valley producers charging more for their wines, this bottling looks m... Read More »

92 points from Robert Parker: "The dark ruby/purple-colored 2005 Pinot Noir Bulldog Reserve (65% from the Solomon Hills Vineyard and the rest from Bien Nacido and a handful of other small plots) is a 500-case cuvee offering beautiful black cherry, tapenade, strawberry, and loamy soil aromas, medium to full body, and superb structure and length. With good acidity and moderate alcohol (by Californian standards) of 13%, this Burgundian-styled Pinot should evolve nicely for a decade." Great stocking stuffers! From Robert Parker's "Value Issue:" "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon from the Amber Knolls area is a good value Cabernet showing black currant fruit with some cherries, spice, and earth. This is an attractive wine with good ripeness and certainly a fair price. These are value-priced wines from one of the Beckstoffer family who has planted vineyards up in Lake County." 91 points and two stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "15% Petite Sirah; 10% Carignane. One of our longtime favorites from this leading Zin producer, the wine returns to shape after a year's flirtation with excessive ripeness. This 2005 edition is filled with outgoing fruit redolent of black-berries, raspberries and sweet cream in both nose and mouth, and its rounded texture receives solid support from the wine's moderate but unmissable tannins. Not in need of lengthy aging, this wholly likeable bottling will nonetheless reward those w... Read More »

Tightly wound red berry and bitter cherry flavors are framed by dusty tannins, picking up anise and herb notes on the back end. Understated and brisk, with good finishing clarity and mineral cut." A new label from winemaker Jeff Hansen (Amici Cellars) at a friendly price. The fruit for this cab comes from the southern parcel of Amici's Saint Helena vineyard, while the merlot (about 10% of the blend) comes from an adjacent vineyard. (02/09) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is Zaca Mesa's basic Syrah, and it's quite a good wine. 91 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Despite its wealth of rich oak and its tantalizing touches of root beer, cocoa and cream, this keenly defined opus is very specific in its deep Cabernet fruit, and its strong themes of ripe currants stay the course from beginning to end. It is an especially well-polished wine on the palate and its very trim tannins allow its concentrated fruit to shine through, but, its present temptations noted, it is impeccably balanced and promises to get better and better for a good many years." Hall combines fruit from a variety of Napa Valley estate vineyards to create their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. But whatever they call it, it has been and continues to be a terrific Zinfandel by any standard.
