Quite possibly our favorite Pinot under $20. This is not a thick syrupy version of Pinot, but if you're a fan of balanced and delicate (and delicious) Pinot Noir we highly recommend grabbing a bottle. It comes from one of the top pinot producers on the Central Coast. Jim Clendenen makes great wine vintage after vintage, using exceptional fruit even in this entry-level beauty. Easy to drink with strawberry and plum notes, good texture, acidity and fruit. Good pinot for $20? Believe it. The Wine Spectator writes: "Floral, perfumed and peppery berry arom... Read More »

From Wine Spectator: "Offers baked cherry pie, with rhubarb and blueberry, showing a wonderful fruit profile that's spicy, elegant and easy to drink. Great balance. Drink now. 35,000 cases made." (Web only, 2009) When James Laube blogged about Redtree Pinot Noir, we were all left sitting with cartoon-y question marks floating above our heads. Redtree? But for once Wine Spectator actually put a wine on our radar before their score and review made it scarce. Usually it is exactly the opposite - by the time Spectator or Parker or any of the myriad of other... Read More »

Bacchant Wines, the title of the collaboration between Master Sommelier Sara Floyd and the Pisoni family, bring you this incredibly tasty and wildly affordable Pinot Noir. From fruit sourced through the Pisoni family's deep connections in the Santa Lucia Highlands and made by Jeff Pisoni, the winemaker for Lucia, this is one Pinot this season that can't miss. The densely fruited nose is packed with red cherry and framboise tones, all the while a subtle lace of black pepper runs through the aromatics of the wine. On entry the wines comes of as ripe, yet i... Read More »

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Most of the grapes came from the Annapolis Vineyard, with some from Seascape. While the vintage was cool, it gave incredibly long hangtime. Dry, crisp and delicate, the wine has a silky voluptuousness that makes it irresistible, with pie-filling cherry and black raspberry flavors finished with Asian spice. New French oak adds toast and vanilla sweetness. It's expensive, but still a bargain." 92 points from Wine Enthusiast: "The Stoller vineyard bottling is a warm, rich and spicy Pinot Noir, with a sweet black cherry fruit core, concentrated and well-matched to the acids and tannins. A smooth and luscious midpalate continues to add flavors of butterscotch and toast, leading into a long and quite satisfying finish. Could be cellared for 6-8 years, but it’s hard to imagine it will ever taste any better than this." The most concentrated of these pinots, with impressively deep dark fruit character and excellent finishing thrust." Even better than the 2006! The 2007 Poppy is made from a combination of Arroyo Seco, Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey County pinot noir, but there were no notable heat spikes to throw off even ripening. Like its predecessor, though, there's tons of vibrant pure fruit on the nose and palate, with hints of spice for intrigue. An affordable, everyday drinker!

91 points Robert Parker: "From the Santa Lucia Highlands, the 2007 Pinot Noir Sleepy Hollow Vineyard (from one of the older vineyards in the area, planted in 1973) has a similar dark ruby color, more floral and forest floor notes, as well as black currant and cherry, medium to full body, and lots of complexity and delicacy. This is a rich, but nuanced style of Pinot Noir that should drink nicely for 5-6 years." 92 points from Robert Parker: "The dark ruby/purple-colored 2005 Pinot Noir Bulldog Reserve (65% from the Solomon Hills Vineyard and the rest from Bien Nacido and a handful of other small plots) is a 500-case cuvee offering beautiful black cherry, tapenade, strawberry, and loamy soil aromas, medium to full body, and superb structure and length. (April 2009) One of our go-to pinots when we're looking for something tasty that won't break the bank. Every vintage of A to Z Pinot Noir delivers and the 2007 is no different. This Cazar Pinot comes from the Russian River Valley and was aged for 10 months - half in new 60-gallon French oak barrels and half in smaller French barriques. Lower in alcohol than many Pinots these days, this wine is balanced and full of fresh fruit and complementary spice. Made by Bill Hunter who, I've said before and I'll say again, is one of my favorite winemakers in California, this is the long lost sister bottling to his Chasseur label. Once again , this wine hits the spot. Great wine at a great price. Luscious red fruit, hint of blue fruit, forest floor, a pinch of baking spices. A balanced, cold weather pinot noir. The wine won't last very long, it has very limited production. (Mike Jordan, K&L Wine Merchants)

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "This distinctive Pinot Noir's source is a tiny vineyard in cool Green Valley; the winegrower is James MacPhail, whose own MacPhail Pinot Noirs are so good. The wine itself is totally dry and silky and firm in acidity, yet soft in fine tannins. You might call it noble. It's eruptive in cherries, sweet smoky bacon, raspberry granola and oaky sandalwood. (10/09) According to Robert Parker: "The Pinot Noirs include the very good 2007 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, which exhibits crisp, plum, cherry, and allspice characteristics along with good body and an attractive, fragrant style. (09/09) The Karmen Isabella vineyard is located in the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River and expresses itself with red fruit character. This is a super small production Pinot Noir from the McHenry Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains - just 150 cases. Proprietor Josh Jensen ferments it with 50% whole clusters and ages it in primarily neutral French oak. There are nearly 16,000 cases of this wine, which exhibits plenty of sassafras, damp earth, soft plum, currant, and pomegranate notes, a deceptive light to medium ruby color, loads of flavor, silky tannins, and a luscious, sensual finish. Sinskey's biodynamically farmed Carneros vineyards produce some really spectacular fruit, as can be seen in their 2007 Pinot Noir bottling. 90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Broadley’s 2008 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley was bottled in June, 2009. A blend of three vineyards, it is a preview of just how good the 2008 vintage is in Willamette Valley. It offers up the superb perfume characteristic of the vintage; unlike 2007 in which spice notes dominate the aromatics, in 2008 fruit and floral aromas have the upper hand. After a challenging 2007 vintage in the Willamette Valley, the late 2008 harvest was quite welcome, creating a wine that is wonderfully balanced and intense. The '08 vintage comes from Illahe (40%), Mahonia (20%) and Eola Springs (40%) vineyards. This has slightly darker fruit notes than usual, with lots of ripe plum and briar fruits on the nose and secondary aromas of sweet earth and dried savory herbs, all of which continue onto the palate.
