Another beautiful zinfandel from the folks at Shenandoah Vineyards in Amador County! There's plenty of fruit, moderate tannins and juicy acidity harmonizing like the Beach Boys. Lower in alcohol than many modern zins (14.2%), this is light enough to enjoy with a good burger at lunch, but complex enough for the evening's braised short ribs over parsnip puree.

90 points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Fifty Super Domestic Wine Values:" "The outstanding 2007 Zinfandel (86% Zinfandel and 14% Petite Sirah) is another winner and phenomenal bargain. This is classic Zinfandel with loads of berry fruit, pepper, earth, and roasted Provencal herbs. The wine is pure, full-bodied, ripe, with not a hard edge to be found. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. These are absolutely spectacular bargains from the very high-quality Varner Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This is their less expensive line-up of wines, and I e... Read More »

94 points & Top 10 wines of 2008, Wine News: "Dense garnet hue. Complex scents of black cherry, allspice and vanilla with secondary nuances of menthol and licorice. Creamy flavors of black cherry and blackberry. Velvety tannins and layers of blueberry, vanilla and mocha in the close." (12/08)

92 points and an Editors' Choice Wine Enthusiast: "An absolutely beautiful Zin, and a must-have for restaurant wine lists. It's pure and complex in blackberries, cherries, cola and mocha, with wonderful spices erupting all the way though, and the most elegant silky texture. What a great job." (12/09) 90 points from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "8% Petite Sirah; 7% Syrah; 6% Grenache; 3% Carignane. When measured against its far riper cousins, this very well-balanced wine may seem a bit light on muscle, but what is really missing is fat, an... Read More »

A "throwback" Zin. No jammy, sweet, mouthcoating flavors here. No searing alcohol. Just a rock solid Old World-styled Zin bursting with flavor. The tangy, fresh raspberry and cranberry fruit flavors belie the wine's age, leading to a much snappier version of Zin than most are used to. Add some cracked white pepper, dried tobacco, marjoram and cinnamon stick flavors and this becomes much more complex and drinkable than about 90% of the Zins on the market. If you want to taste a slice of Zin history, this is a perfect wine for you. If you like Zin that tas... Read More »

91 points and two stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "15% Petite Sirah; 10% Carignane. One of our longtime favorites from this leading Zin producer, the wine returns to shape after a year's flirtation with excessive ripeness. This 2005 edition is filled with outgoing fruit redolent of black-berries, raspberries and sweet cream in both nose and mouth, and its rounded texture receives solid support from the wine's moderate but unmissable tannins. Not in need of lengthy aging, this wholly likeable bottling will nonetheless reward those w... Read More »

91 points and two stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "58% Zinfandel; 22% Carignane; 18% Petite Sirah; 2% Mataro. An intriguing note of cranberry-like fruit sets this offering off on a track of its own while complexing elements of sweet oak, anise, dark chocolate and tar contribute further distinction. Somewhat tighter than most past Geyserville bottlings, it is a solidly structured effort whose ample richness is met by lots of vitality, and, if a bit angular at this point, it promises to blossom with a few years of age and reward thos... Klinker Brick's "Old Vine" Zin comes from vines that average 85 years of age grown near the Mokelumne River in Lodi. This is a sweet, jammy wine reminscent of blackberry pie, black bepper and cigar box on the nose and palate. A concentrated vintage that's juicy and sweet, this calls for a grassfed burger with onion and tomato confit and tangy blue cheese.

From the winery: "Rombauer Vineyards’ 2007 Zinfandel is dramatically seductive and immensely flavorful. 96 points Wine & Spirits: "One taste of this wine and you might forget Cabernet. In fact, this is what Napa Valley growers should consider the ideal. It's classic, beautiful, wildly fruited Zin, farmed to catch the cooler, morning sun and to hold onto its zest and elegance. Made to be transparent in color and incisive in flavor. Pure California in its memory of sage brush and desert heat. Delicious now, and likely to be more delicious 20 years from now, as Jerry Seps's wines age with grace." 95 points and three stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to Cali... Read More »

According to the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "24% Petite Sirah. The rather pushy form of Petite Sirah shows in this wine, and it helps separate its blocky, spicy, dried blackberry character from most other inexpensive Zinfandels. This wine has both body and evident tannin to go with its noticeably ripe and rustic personality, and whereas wines at this price tend towards easy simplicity, this one is raring to take on heavier dishes. GOOD VALUE." (01/08)

Many of today's zinfandels are so high in alcohol and aggressive fruit that they taste more like a Jell-O shot than a glass of wine. But not the 2006 Kalinda Zin, a special cuvée bottled for K&L by a vintner Robert Parker once called "One of my favorite zinfandel producers." Picked at relatively low brix (sugar level), the wine is aged for 13 months in French and American oak (about 20% new American). The wine's earthy framework keeps the blackberry fruit in check, creating a balanced zinfandel with acidity, fruit tannin and oak tannins all working toget... Read More »

Seghesio's "Home Ranch" vineyard was planted in 1895. This head-trained, Alexander Valley site faired better than well in 2007. If you can pull your nose far enough out of the glass to tilt it back and drink the wine, you'll experience mouth-filling berry fruit, cracked black pepper, smoke and cocoa powder flavors framed with focused old vine acidity and fine, ripe tannins. Seghesio's Rockpile Zin is a double-whammy - it showcases the concentrated fruit that comes from the steep, rocky Rockpile appellation while also waving the flag of a stellar vintage, one winemaker Ted Seghesio calls the best to date. Deep raspberry and black currant aromas are highlighted by scents of clove and spicy black pepper on the nose and mirrored on the wine's palate. And though it's remarkably concentrated, Rockpile's elevation and soil adds minerality and bright acidity that make this a wonderfully balanced and complex Zin. Try with hanger ste... Read More »

From its first nose of ripe, concentrated blackberries tinged with sweet spices to the background notes of soils, toast and toffee to its varietally compelling flavors firmed by tough yet fruit-buffered tannins, this one never lets up, but it does want time in the cellar to soften its age-demanding astringency." 95 points, three stars and a "Top 10 Wines of 2008" designation from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California wine: "Some years back Ridge removed the varietal identifier from its Geyserville red wine made substantially from Zinfandel but a field-blend in reality. But whatever they call it, it has been and continues to be a terrific Zinfandel by any standard. Another of Ridge's classic wines - and from the wow-worthy 2007 vintage nonetheless. Fans of Lytton Springs should not miss this vintage. The 2007 vintage of J. Runquist's "Z" from Amador County illustrates the depth and complexity possible in the Sierra Foothills. Mountain lavender and flowery violet overtones complement the wine's bright red fruit bouquet perfectly. 95 points and three stars from The Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "In all honesty, we do neither look for nor expect such high ripeness and weight from Zinfandels grown in the Russian River Valley as are conveyed by this very deep, very outgoing, impressively extracted effort, but, if not speaking so directly to "place" it unmistakably shouts "richness". This is the sort of Zinfandel to pour blind for those of your wine snobby, Euro geek friends who claim to abhor California's iconoclast variety.
