2007 Owen Roe "Ex-Umbris" Columbia Valley Syrah Top Pick!
2007 Owen Roe "Ex-Umbris" Columbia Valley Syrah

92 points Wine Spectator: "Velvety, offering a plush mouthful of spicy cherry and red berry flavors, playing against plush tannins and hints of milk chocolate on the long, vivid finish. Syrah. Drink now through 2014." (10/09) 90 points and a Good Value, Connoisseurs' Guide: "This wine's keenly focused blackberry aromas are filled out with quiet but evident spice notes, and its convincing fruit flows from first sniff to aftertaste with nary a letup in sight. Supple, slightly fleshy and full-bodied yet never heavy, it is fairly polished in feel with integ... Read More »

2006 Stolpman Vineyards Estate Santa Ynez Syrah (Was $27) Top Pick!
2006 Stolpman Vineyards Estate Santa Ynez Syrah (Was $27)

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque ruby. Exotically perfumed bouquet of dark berries, Christmas spices, violet and minerals. Elegant, medium-bodied red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, with a dusty mineral quality contributing energy. Sappy dark berry flavors linger on the long, juicy finish. This is already delicious." (Nov/Dec '08) 90 points from Robert Parker: "There are 2,000 cases of the 2006 Syrah Estate, a blend of 85% Syrah and 15% Grenache. 2006 Copain "L'Hiver" Mendocino County Syrah
2006 Copain "L'Hiver" Mendocino County Syrah

Described by Robert Parker as Copain's interpretation of a St-Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage, the Saisons des Vins "L'Hiver" is consistently an incredible value-driven syrah that showcases winemaker Wells Guthrie's talent. Guthrie, who spent time working with such famed Rhône producers as Michel Chapoutier and Jean-Louis Chave, deftly incorporates what he learned in France with a deep understanding of California-grown syrah. Like a firecracker on the Fourth of July, the 2006 L'Hiver has a bouquet of smoke, flint and ripe blackberries. On the palate, the blac... Read More »

2006 Castle Rock Columbia Valley Syrah
2006 Castle Rock Columbia Valley Syrah

Voted one of the "Top 100 Best Buys of 2008" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine: "Somehow, this California winery manages to put out the best budget Syrah in all of Washington State. Pure varietal, this excellent bottle brings clean berry fruit, natural acids and moderate tannins into play, with none of the bizarrely sweet vanilla and tobacco flavors that typically show up on Yellowtail wannabes. This wine just wants to be what it is--affordable, juicy and nicely representative of the higher acid, food-ready flavors of Washington state grapes." (12/31/2008) Th... Read More »

2005 Zaca Mesa Santa Ynez Valley Syrah

92 points and a "Smart Buys" designation from Wine Spectator: "Tight and beefy, with focused blueberry and wild berry flavors that are spicy and complex. Full-bodied, with a hint of stewed plum and wild berry peaking through on the finish. Drink now through 2015." (02/09) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is Zaca Mesa's basic Syrah, and it's quite a good wine. Dry and rich in tannins, it's showing complex flavors of black currants, black pepper, violets and cedar with a meaty, leathery edge. Now through 2010." (05/09)

2006 CL Sonoma Coast Syrah
2006 CL Sonoma Coast Syrah

This winery is so small they don't even have a website. This Syrah comes from Flocchini Vineyard on Old Lake Lakeville Rd at the south end of Petaluma. This wine really showcases the appellation's cool-climate fruit. Smoked meat and earth aromas carry over to the full but soft and creamy palate. This is a wonderfully nuanced Syrah for the price.

2006 Ramey "Shanel Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Syrah (Was $60)

93 points Robert Parker: "Slightly better is the 2006 Syrah Shanel Vineyard. It includes 3% Viognier, but it is less noticeable at this stage. An opaque purple color is followed by enormous quantities of blackberries intermixed with tapenade, acacia flowers, and truffles. Full-bodied, meaty, and dense, it cuts an even broader mouthfeel than its sibling. It, too, can be drunk over the next decade. 2007 Qupe Central Coast Syrah

For fans of Syrah's intensity, but also of subtle nuance and elegance. This isn't your usual in-your-face CA Syrah, but something like liquid chantilly lac to pair with dinner. According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep red. Red and dark berry aromas are brightened by cracked pepper and black tea. Light-bodied red raspberry and cherry flavors are pleasantly bitter, with good back-end snap. I'm not sure that I'd guess this to be syrah (there's a pinot-like delicacy to it) but it's pleasantly clean and brisk." (Nov/Dec '08)

2006 Hogue "Genesis" Columbia Valley Syrah
2006 Hogue "Genesis" Columbia Valley Syrah

92 points and a "Best Buy" designation from Wine & Spirits Magazine: "Hogue's syrahs from its Genesis series are generally open, generous expressions of the grape, a lot of fruit for the money. In 2006, Hogue's red winemaker, Jordan Ferrier, captured the freshness of a great vintage, from sources in the Horse Heaven Hills and Wahluke Slope. It's as rich as chocolate cake, but its texture remains remarkably lifted and succulent. Ideal for barbecue." (Tasting Highlights, Sept. 14, 2009) Lewis' 2007 Syrah Napa Valley is the muscle car, the big-block powered bottle from our Rhone wine line-up. The vineyard sourcing is interesting, ranging from the Sierra Foothills through Paso Robles and the Salinas Valley to the Santa Cruz Mountains. Rich black raspberry and cassis flavors are complicated by cracked pepper, olive and candied violet, with silky tannins lending support and focus. It's pretty astringent now, a bone-dry, peppery wine with wild blackberry, herb, violet and pepper flavors finishing with stony, chalky minerality. Cellaring for a few years should soften the edges." (11/09) From Robert Parker: "The 2007 Syrah Verna's Vineyard is the most supple, forward, and fruity of this trio. Kathyrn Kennedy's Syrah, made in miniscule amounts in the Santa Cruz Mountains, is flavorful and complex, and very stylish. It doesn’t have to beat you over the head to get its point across. 2006 J. Runquist "R" Paso Robles Syrah

This Syrah is one of only two wines that Jeff Runquist makes that doesn't come from a single vineyard. Instead it blends fruit from Goodwin, Westigard and Carter vineyards northeast of the town of Paso Robles. The combination of fruit makes for a wine reflective of the McClaren Vale Shirazes that Runquist fell in love with while working at J. Lohr from 1990 to 1996. Deeply colored, almost purple, this wine lets loose a bold display of ripe red and black fruit notes with a hint of hazelnut and smoke underneath. On the palate, the fruit it thick and rich, ... 91 points and two stars from The Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "If not quite as big as its appropriately named partner, this solid Syrah has more than enough muscle and mass, and it balances ripeness with a full measure of very deep fruit. It sports a true-to-type streak of peppery spice as an accent to its main themes of oak-sweetened berries, and, even though cramped by acidity and toughened by tannin just now, it never lets go of its incisive fruit. 2005 Piedrasassi California Syrah

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Nov/Dec 08: "Bright red. Highly perfumed bouquet of red berries, blackcurrant, cola and smoky Indian spices. Tangy, sharply focused black raspberry and blackcurrant flavors stain the palate, with silky tannins building with air. Juicy, lithe and admirably focused syrah with excellent finishing lift and cut. This is delicious now but possesses the balance to age." 92 points Robert Parker: "Performing better than the 2006 Syrah is the bottled 2005 Syrah, which offers up lovely aromas and flavors of swe... 2007 Lucia "Susan's Hill Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah Back In Stock!
2007 Lucia "Susan's Hill Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah

This comes from one of the highest ridges on the Pisoni property in the Santa Lucia Highlands, where the vines are stressed by rocky soils and batttering winds. The combination lends itself to a dark, sultry wine with aromas of blackberry and bacon fat, with subtler hints of leather, sage and olives that continue ontot he palate. Full-bodied, but with good acidity and firm tannins that need a little air or time to soften.

2008 Lewis Cellars Vin Gris Syrah
2008 Lewis Cellars Vin Gris Syrah

Whether you call it rosé or vin gris, the pink stuff has finally reclaimed its rightful place at the American table. This one is made entirely of Napa Syrah, fermented and aged for 3-4 months in a combination of neutral French oak and stainless steel barrels. This vin gris smells like early summer - stone fruits and wild strawberries - and the aromas carry over to the palate. You'll want to have some of this in your stash for barbecue season…but there were only 100 cases produced, so don't miss it.

2007 Amavi Walla Walla Syrah
2007 Amavi Walla Walla Syrah

"...One of Walla Walla's value superstars," says critic Paul Gregutt; "...one of Washington's outperfoming labels," says the San Francisco Chronicle. Amavi Cellars is one of those top-notch wineries that should be on everbody's radar, though somehow it always seems that this incredible Washington producer gets overshadowed by high-profile California wines. What that means for you is a lot of wine for not a lot of money. The Syrah is a wine of delicate sophistication and powerhouse fruit - a contrast that translates into something really spectacular. 2005 Unti Vineyards Dry Creek Syrah
2005 Unti Vineyards Dry Creek Syrah

Mick Unti and Sébastian Pochan are doing some impressive work in the Dry Creek Valley, pooling their talents to create a wine that deftly walks the line between New World and Old World - a marriage between the reserve and earthiness of a St. Joseph and a fruit-filled Dry Creek Syrah. The 2005 vintage Syrah is the winery's first to be dominated by fruit from the Unti's Winery Block Vineyard, with the remainder coming from the original benchland site. (Both vineyards are farmed biodynamically.) Lots of purple flower and spice aromas on the nose balanced by... Read More »

2004 Blue Rock Vineyard Sonoma Syrah
2004 Blue Rock Vineyard Sonoma Syrah

This is winemakers Nick Goldschmidt and Kenneth Kahn's fourth vintage of Blue Rock Syrah, made from 100% estate grown Alexander Valley fruit. Focused on grace and elegance rather than extraction, the wine's smoky meat, pomegranate and blackcurrant aromas are redolent of Northern Rhône. The bouquet continues on the palate, adding game and earth flavors as well as some black cherry. Soft, fine-grained tannins make this wine approachable now, but it has enough structure to continue to improve over the next five years. 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The tannins... Read More »
