Lower in alcohol than previous vintages, the 2007 Santa Barbara County Syrah is loaded with dark blackberry fruit, hints of bacon fat, earth and a little spice. This comes from one of the highest ridges on the Pisoni property in the Santa Lucia Highlands, where the vines are stressed by rocky soils and batttering winds. The combination lends itself to a dark, sultry wine with aromas of blackberry and bacon fat, with subtler hints of leather, sage and olives that continue ontot he palate. Full-bodied, but with good acidity and firm tannins that need a little air or time to soften.

Whether you call it rosé or vin gris, the pink stuff has finally reclaimed its rightful place at the American table. This one is made entirely of Napa Syrah, fermented and aged for 3-4 months in a combination of neutral French oak and stainless steel barrels. This vin gris smells like early summer - stone fruits and wild strawberries - and the aromas carry over to the palate. You'll want to have some of this in your stash for barbecue season…but there were only 100 cases produced, so don't miss it.

Mick Unti and Sébastian Pochan are doing some impressive work in the Dry Creek Valley, pooling their talents to create a wine that deftly walks the line between New World and Old World - a marriage between the reserve and earthiness of a St. Joseph and a fruit-filled Dry Creek Syrah. This is winemakers Nick Goldschmidt and Kenneth Kahn's fourth vintage of Blue Rock Syrah, made from 100% estate grown Alexander Valley fruit. Focused on grace and elegance rather than extraction, the wine's smoky meat, pomegranate and blackcurrant aromas are redolent of Northern Rhône. The bouquet continues on the palate, adding game and earth flavors as well as some black cherry.
