90 points Wine Spectator "Polished and silky in texture, with ripe blackberry, currant and mint flavors that keep sailing through the long, expressive finish. The tannins are beautifully integrated. Best from 2011 through 2017. " (Web only, 2009) If it's Columbia Crest's large production that helps keep its prices so pocket-friendly, we're all for it. But it's the fruit quality and attention to detail, despite the large production, that keeps us coming back. The H3 from the Horse Heaven Hills is fruit-forward and approachable style of Cabernet, with swe... Read More »

92 points Wine Spectator: "Velvety, offering a plush mouthful of spicy cherry and red berry flavors, playing against plush tannins and hints of milk chocolate on the long, vivid finish. Syrah. Drink now through 2014." (10/09) 90 points and a Good Value, Connoisseurs' Guide: "This wine's keenly focused blackberry aromas are filled out with quiet but evident spice notes, and its convincing fruit flows from first sniff to aftertaste with nary a letup in sight. Supple, slightly fleshy and full-bodied yet never heavy, it is fairly polished in feel with integ... Read More »

92 points and one of the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Dense and chewy, but with a nice lift of acidity and freshness as the finish rolls in, framing the cherry, blackberry, coffee and smoke flavors as they linger expressively. Best from 2011 through 2018." (07/09) One star from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "7% Merlot; 2% Cabernet Franc. All analogies to Merlot here are strictly intentional. There is rich, somewhat gentle character and the openness of Merlot fruit to this wine, and it is better off for it even though some will ... Read More »

Voted one of the "Top 100 Best Buys of 2008" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine: "Somehow, this California winery manages to put out the best budget Syrah in all of Washington State. Pure varietal, this excellent bottle brings clean berry fruit, natural acids and moderate tannins into play, with none of the bizarrely sweet vanilla and tobacco flavors that typically show up on Yellowtail wannabes. This wine just wants to be what it is--affordable, juicy and nicely representative of the higher acid, food-ready flavors of Washington state grapes." (12/31/2008) Th... Read More »

92 points and one of the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Sturdy, ripe and generous, with a surprisingly soft edge to the explosive black cherry, currant, black olive and smoke flavors, lingering effortlessly on the big, round finish. Best from 2010 through 2018." (06/09) The Canoe Ridge Estate was planted in 1991 and, at 18 years old, it's really starting to hit its stride. The steep, south-facing vineyard on the banks of the Columbia River is protected from extreme temperatures, allowing the fruit to mature slowly and evenly. The site's influe... Read More »

This is the Hedges Estate flagship wine, blending fruit from their three estate vineyards: Hedges Estate, Bel'Villa and Red Mountain Vineyards. The 2006 is composed of a majority merlot and cabernet sauvignon, with small amounts of cabernet franc and syrah for added complexity. The wine has an intriguing nose of blackberry, plum and cherry with hints of cantaloupe in the background backed up by a chorus of toasty oak spice. Medium-bodied with velvety tannins and balanced acidity, the wine already delivers the complexity of its bouquet on the palate and s... Read More »

95 points, three stars and a "Top 10 Wines of 2008" designation from the Connoisseurs’ Guide: "Taking its accustomed place at the head of the class as it has in so many past vintages, this latest rendition from Chateau Ste. Michelle and Ernst Loosen is a remarkable wine of impeccable balance and stunning depth. Slightly sweet and buoyed by fine fruity acids, it smells of honeysuckle, white peaches and minerals and follows with long, compact, layered flavors that presently only hint at the richness to come. As noted in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Columbia Crest, owned by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, has long been known for the quality of its value-priced wines." (10/09) And who isn't loving value right now?? Once again, in this balanced and lip-smackingly good 2008, Columbia Crest really delivers. Apple, lemon zest and tropical notes of mango and pineapple form the core of this fruit-forward wine. But it's not just about delicious fruit salad here. There is also vanilla, toast and a touch of balancing minerality and acid. An ideal everyday Chardonnay, pr... Read More »

For the second vintage in a row, the Magnificent Wine Compnay's "House Wine" Columbia Valley Red was named a "Best Value" by the Wine Spectator, which wrote: "Fresh, open-textured and distinctive for its peppery raspberry flavors that linger gently. Corvidae Wine Company's "Rook" blended red wine is a crowd-pleaser. It's a blend of Cabernet, Merlot, and Syrah from three distinctly different vineyards - Ironbird Vineyard, in Southern Oregon's Applegate Valley, Erickson Vineyard, in Washington's Yakima Valley, and St. Isidore Vineyard, in the high priced and trendy Walla Walla appellation. The ripe and rich Cabernet flavors prevail - juicy loganberry, cassis, and a base note of black plum and cherry. Syrah adds richness, and Merlot smooths the velvet finish.

92 points and a "Best Buy" designation from Wine & Spirits Magazine: "Hogue's syrahs from its Genesis series are generally open, generous expressions of the grape, a lot of fruit for the money. In 2006, Hogue's red winemaker, Jordan Ferrier, captured the freshness of a great vintage, from sources in the Horse Heaven Hills and Wahluke Slope. (Web only, 2009) Washington's Mike Januik has worked in the Columbia Valley since the mid-1980s, and has established relationships with the region's top growers. Château Ste. Michelle grows a number of Rhône varieties throughout Washington's Columbia Valley, but sometimes the wine doesn't find a home at blending time; it's orphaned. Never fined nor filtered, maybe that's part of the reason this strapping, brooding and yet still elegant red is so damn good!
