92 points from Wine Enthusiast: "The Stoller vineyard bottling is a warm, rich and spicy Pinot Noir, with a sweet black cherry fruit core, concentrated and well-matched to the acids and tannins. A smooth and luscious midpalate continues to add flavors of butterscotch and toast, leading into a long and quite satisfying finish. Could be cellared for 6-8 years, but it’s hard to imagine it will ever taste any better than this." 94 points Wine Spectator: "Complex, riveting aromas of spice, cola and sassafras join wild berry, spice, black cherry and sage notes in this full-bodied, intensely flavored, tightly focused and very persistent display of fruit that's long and lingering." (03/09) 92 points and two stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "Both of the Caymus Cabernets reviewed in this issue embrace unabashed ripeness as a defining trait, but, in this instance, the wine's rush to ripeness is balanced by a wealth of very sweet oak and well-extracted fruit. 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque ruby. Exotically perfumed bouquet of dark berries, Christmas spices, violet and minerals. Elegant, medium-bodied red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, with a dusty mineral quality contributing energy. Sappy dark berry flavors linger on the long, juicy finish. This is already delicious." (Nov/Dec '08) 90 points from Robert Parker: "There are 2,000 cases of the 2006 Syrah Estate, a blend of 85% Syrah and 15% Grenache. 92 points from Robert Parker: "The dark ruby/purple-colored 2005 Pinot Noir Bulldog Reserve (65% from the Solomon Hills Vineyard and the rest from Bien Nacido and a handful of other small plots) is a 500-case cuvee offering beautiful black cherry, tapenade, strawberry, and loamy soil aromas, medium to full body, and superb structure and length. With good acidity and moderate alcohol (by Californian standards) of 13%, this Burgundian-styled Pinot should evolve nicely for a decade." A "throwback" Zin. No jammy, sweet, mouthcoating flavors here. No searing alcohol. Just a rock solid Old World-styled Zin bursting with flavor. The tangy, fresh raspberry and cranberry fruit flavors belie the wine's age, leading to a much snappier version of Zin than most are used to. Add some cracked white pepper, dried tobacco, marjoram and cinnamon stick flavors and this becomes much more complex and drinkable than about 90% of the Zins on the market. If you want to taste a slice of Zin history, this is a perfect wine for you. If you like Zin that tas... Read More »

According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Light, bright yellow. Fresh apple, fig and tangerine on the nose, with a kiss of vanillin oak adding depth. Pliant orchard and pit fruit flavors are given tangy lift by citrus peel and dusty minerals. The fruit is a touch sweet but the wine's minerality helps it maintain focus and energy." Club Price: $14.4991 points and two stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "15% Petite Sirah; 10% Carignane. One of our longtime favorites from this leading Zin producer, the wine returns to shape after a year's flirtation with excessive ripeness. This 2005 edition is filled with outgoing fruit redolent of black-berries, raspberries and sweet cream in both nose and mouth, and its rounded texture receives solid support from the wine's moderate but unmissable tannins. Not in need of lengthy aging, this wholly likeable bottling will nonetheless reward those w... Read More »

A stunning, cherry and cranberry-filled Pinot Noir wrapped up with an earth and spice bow. The fruit comes from Foley's Rancho Santa Rosa, part of the original Spanish Land Grant, and one of Santa Barbara's most historic properties. Planted into a steep hillside in one of the coolest parts of the Santa Ynez Valley, the site is ideal for growing bright, structured Pinot Noir. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels, which smooth the wine's texture and add spicy notes that complement the crisp acidity.

If you took a poll of all the K&L employees and asked them what their favorite Zinfandels are, Joseph Swan would be one of the top 2 or 3 on everyone's list. The Joseph Swan Winery has been making top notch zins since 1968 when Joseph Swan, one year earlier, purchased a small farm on Laguna Road near Forestville that was planted to 13 acres of old zinfandel. 95 points and three stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "20% Petite Sirah; 4% Carignane. The mating of Teldeschi fruit with the Ravenswood hand has yielded superb results across the years, and 2006 is not exception. From its first nose of ripe, concentrated blackberries tinged with sweet spices to the background notes of soils, toast and toffee to its varietally compelling flavors firmed by tough yet fruit-buffered tannins, this one never lets up, but it does want time in the cellar to soften its age-demanding astringency." Consistently a great value wine for California Chardonnay fans, the Bogle Chard undergoes partial malo and barrel fermentation, but it has a good dose of acidity to keep the wine from becoming cloying. Buttery and rich with apple and pear aromas and flavors touched off with nutmeg and vanilla, finishing with a little hint of Werther's Original. The thing we like most about this is the fact that the wine does not taste like syrah. So many of the Central Coast, and more recently other California appelations, pinot noirs have become too monsterous, too spiced. These wines have more in common with wines from the Northern Rhone, than wines from Burgundy. I don't know about you but I like my pinot to taste like pinot. Well the J Wilkes does in a big way. Peter Hunken and Amy Christine of Black Sheep Finds wowed K&L with their first two releases of Hocus Pocus Syrah, quickly placing their wine among the staff's favorites. The vineyard source for Foghorn's 2005 Monterey Pinot Noir is one of the closest to Monterey Bay in the appellation. Subjected to the Pacific's moderating influences and planted in red, decomposed granite soils, the site is naturally low-yielding.
