90 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid ruby. Perfumed aromas of cherry, raspberry, mint, licorice and white pepper. Dense and ripe but lively, with palate-coating flavors of red berry and cherry liqueur, rose and spices. Shows a refreshingly bitter cast to its juicy, focused finish, which strongly echoes the cherry and licorice notes." (May/Jun '10) Cep is the second label for the exceptional Peay Vineyards - and it is a source of both fantastic value and for winemaker Andy Peay to have a little fun. The Cep Pinot is made from ... 90 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky violet. Textbook syrah aromas of cassis, cherry skin, violet, black olive and cracked pepper, with a slow-building note of licorice. Sappy, penetrating dark fruit flavors are framed by silky tannins and given spine by juicy acidity. The lingering, focused finish leaves notes of pepper and candied flowers behind." (May/Jun '10) This is the second label of the very excellent and very remote Peay Vineyards, which just happens to own the coldest Syrah vineyard in the United States! Violets, whi... Read More »

Woodenhead's owner and winemaker, Nikolai Stez spent 17 years of his career working at legendary Russian River winery, Williams-Selyem, spending 12 of those years as assistant winemaker. Today, Nikolai sources fruit for Woodenhead's pinots and zins from some of the top vineyard sites in Sonoma, Mendocino and Humboldt counties. The Russian River's Buena Tierra Vineyard is the source of some of the Valley's most interesting boutique pinot noirs, including those from Burt Williams' daughter's winery, Brogan Cellars.

93 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellars: "Bright purple. Vibrant raspberry, cherry, potpourri and incense on the sharply focused, highly expressive nose. Dense, juicy and sweet, with graceful strawberry and raspberry flavors and a supple, seamless texture. Picks up spiciness and floral character, as well as a hint of smoke, with a few minutes of aeration. Finishes very long, with gentle tannins and a strong note of candied flowers. I marginally prefer this wine's elegance to the power of the Les Titans today." (May/Jun '10) La Bruma ("... Read More »

This is the perfect after dinner wine, contemplative, complex and comforting. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc this is a familiar blend presented in an entirely different way. From all free run juice this has an outstanding nose of mocha, carob, black currant, camphor and tarragon. Intense is a word that I wrote about this wine but to most that would be misleading. This is not a heavy, oak laden wine but it is complex and lasting with flavors that unfold gracefully. It is a wine that you have to think about to enjoy. D... Read More »

92 points Wine Spectator: "Firm and intense, with complex loamy earth, spice, dried currant, sage and mineral. Full-bodied and intense, a touch rustic at midpalate, with a dense, layered finish. Drink now through 2020. " (06/10) Varietal Breakdown: 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc Winemaker's Notes: Beautifully rich and intense nose; cedary oak, cassis, spice, blood plum, cherry, dark chocolate and vanilla. The wine is distinguished by its fine, integrated, chalky tannins that are supported by strong fruit flavors. While ... Read More »

91 points Stephen Tanzer's IWC: "Bright ruby. Exotically perfumed aromas of cherry-cola, five-spice powder, cinnamon, tobacco and smoked meat, with a sexy floral quality gaining strength with air. Deeply concentrated dark berry compote flavors are framed by supple tannins and brightened by Asian spices and minerals. The tannins carry through the finish but don't interfere with the wine's sweet, juicy, very persistent berry qualities. Give this a couple more years in the bottle." (Nov/Dec '09) The Rattlesnake Rock name was inspired by the large outcrop o... Read More »

Slower to reveal itself than other Big Basin wines, the Mandala Syrah is just starting to hint at its potential. It comes the winery's Estate vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains as well Fairview Ranch in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The combination of fruit creates a wine that, with some air, opens up to display aromas of plum, rhubarb, spice, white pepper and a little pine pitch. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with flavors of blackberry, Big cherry cedar box and earth. Firm tannins and lingering spice on the finish. This wine will really start ... Read More »

89 points Wine Spectator: "Tight, intense and focused, with a mix of spice, pepper, dried berry, raspberry and cola. Full-bodied, gaining depth and complexity on the long, focused finish. Drink now through 2016. 245 cases made." (12/09) The fruit sources for this medium-bodied Syrah are split evenly between the Santa Cruz Mountains and Monterey County. Medium-bodied, with mineral, rhubarb and plum fruit and subtle lavender and vanilla overtones. Mouthcoating tannins and good acidity make this a fresher, vibrant Syrah for drinking young with hearty foods... Read More »
